Today we returned to the Saxon Site in the hope of a Sceat. Sadly it was still an ankle breaker & after 2 hours 15 minutes we gave up with just a Saxon Pin, Saxon Strap-end & Medieval Horse Pendant.
I then challenged Cru'dad to pick a field on the way home & he chose a site that he has mentioned a couple of times & I've not been keen. It's a low yield Roman Site that has had less than 30 bronzes & no silver. However, it was his pick & at least it had been deep ploughed & rolled.(2 hour hunt)
So as it happens it was totally the right call with a Roman Silver Pin (Treasure) & CELTIC GOLD!!! (My second this year)

12 Roman Coins
2 Tudor Buttons
Medieval Horse Harness Pendant (Type I need)
Saxon Pin (near complete)
Saxon Strap-end
Roman Bronze Pin
Roman SILVER Pin
Romano-Celtic Ring (shame it's broke) We have had this in kids size, but this is daddies...
Celtic Gold Stater of Cunobelin circa 10-20AD.:headbang:

Wow ! That is amazing!

Epic. Congratulations.

i love how gold coins come out of the ground looking like they were made yesterday! after 16 of them do you ever get a preminition? your coins are always the best of the best on this site!
Celtic Gold's can't really be aimed for, they just come out of the blue, like this one. But if there was a site I have a better chance on its the Metal Working Site.

THANKS FOR THE BANNER GUYS:occasion14:

Belated congrats on making banner with more Celtic gold. I don't reply to your posts as much as I should - so jelly for not living in England. But I do live in New England, a good a place as any for detecting in the US. I did my second and final trip to Colchester last year, but the finds were unsubstantial and always the result of nothing more than luck and persistence, which is usually what it takes - mostly. But there's no research involved, and that's what I like most. Keep at it. I'm waiting on you to post a hoard or gold torque.

Colchester is a really rich historical area, far better than the poorer Roman homesteads that I research. If I were in that area, I would never leave it to luck. Persistence only works in the right areas. Which means days of gridding acres of land.
Were you searching Site's or random fields?
From what I understand hoards & torques come from those random fields with very little in it & therefore not the type I target. So yes, to find that would be luck as it would be one of my blind hunt scouting missions.

Congratulations on yet another stellar find and banner!

how many random staters do you figure come out of the ground in a year?

Random fields - but I've only been twice since 2011 and don't plan on a return trip. You need to be doing annual trips or even twice a year to learn the lay of the land.

Super Find!!! Nice Hunt!!! Congrats!!!!

Or Google Earth it, or use some of the Archie resources. Failing that you need a guide to put you on it. We don't get new permissions anymore without a strong target on it. Too much land with very little/nothing on it. However, your right, if your blind hunting you need much more time & know what signs your looking for. Time is our only enemy.

yes, i see them for sale on EBAY (bought one) so I figure folks must be finding them. I can't see myself ever selling one, they are the apex of finds as far as i am concerned.

I never sell anything like that, but I have now given 3 away to land-owners.

Wow!

Nicely done, and all the best,

Lanny
