Samples from around Colorado

Thanks again kevin. I was also wondering if you have a contact about where is ok to pan in downtown denver. I know about the i70 bridge and have seen it in many youtube videos and would kind of like to say i panned there. I was also looking at clear creek passed the coors plant. now that im really getting specific im kind of overwhelmed with the opportunities that are available.

As long as you are on public property as you access the river you are ok throughout all of metro Denver with one exception: Wheatridge from I-70 east to their eastern city limit has banned prospecting. I understand feeling overwhelmed, we are really lucky here to have lots of prospecting opportunities in town! The key thing generally is to focus your digging on areas with cobble stones, not just gravel/sand.

For Clear Creek just downstream of Coors, get off at the Youngfield St exit from I-70, go west to e first light then north (road snakes a bit) to a parking area with a paved path down to the recreational path along the creek. Then I suggest walking up stream at least past the first 200 yards of creek to get to the better gold. This area is in the process of being declared a gold panning park (yay!!). My only caution as before is the current high water level. You should not do any digging on the bank which supports the bike path (duh!). You really do best in the middle of the creek in areas where the creek has dropped larger rocks...which is tough when the water is high and fast.

Finally, the bridges you've seen on YouTube are consistently good producers as long as water levels are manageable. Google earth can help you see the access points near the bridges. Usually the areas 20-100 yards downstream from each bridge are the best due to the way the water races thru the engineered area under the bridge and then slows just down stream :)

I rode the bike path at the I70 Bridge two days ago. There were some people prospecting there, but the water was really ripping through -- too much and too fast for me.

Yup, same here...that's why I suggested the South Platte as a safer alternative in my earlier posts here. That is where I got my latest gold a week ago: (along with a few garnets and a fish hook)

That's great! I love to see gold in the pan. I would like to make a trip to Colorado. Maybe it will be my next trip out prospecting, I wish Oklahoma had more gold in its creeks. Thanks for sharing it helps get me fired up lol.
Thanks
Ok prospector

Thanks Kevin. Love seeing the pics.

Question: do you know of a good method for identifying petrified wood?

Hmm, no not really. I've dragged several rocks home that I THINK are petrified wood and look cool but I am a pretty specialized sort of mineral collector (gold, gold, gold!).
