Recent Finds From "Spoon Graveyard"

Hello Everyone!

I hope you've all been well. As many of you know already, I became a new father to a beautiful baby boy one month ago, so the last few weeks have largely consisted of changing diapers and grabbing power naps, but there were a few days when the weather was simply TOO nice to stay home. I pleaded with the wife, and out I went. ;)

You also may know that I've been pounding a great spot all winter that I call "Spoon Graveyard," due to the vast amount of spoons I've found there (I think 15 or 16, at this point). I've been determined to dig as much of it as I can before the warm weather and ticks arrive, so I've been jetting down there with every spare hour I have.

I've already pulled a TON of goodies out of the ground here, so it's starting to slow down a bit, but when I stay disciplined and work a strict grid the finds DO keep coming. Here are the highlights of what I've found the last few outings:

  • Two more Indian Heads -- an 1878 and 1902 (11 IHs from this site in all)
  • One large brooch with what looks like a giant ruby (imagine!) but must be costume jewelry (that Barber half is shown for scale)
  • One large lead toy stagecoach
  • One child's pocketknife (I've found five or so pocketknives here)
  • Another crotal bell (that's #5, I believe)
  • Ornate old sugar tongs
  • Two more spoons, one of which is silver plated in a pattern I've found there before
  • Several buttons, a buckle, and an old safety pin, as well as some kind of tiny charm or medal, and another harmonica reed fragment
  • One intact tin of "Symphony Face Powder"
  • Some sort of round whatsit that could be an ornate cap to something
  • A bunch of miscellaneous relics, including a toy cap gun, an iron snap buckle, a lantern piece, and some metal jar lids and whatsits
  • Two more mason jar lids with milk glass liners
  • My usual heap of bullets and shotgun shells (not pictured)

I may be getting toward the end of the season for this spot, so hopefully the spring/summer spots will be as kind as this one. Until then, enjoy the pics!

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

Re: Recent Finds From "Spoon Graveyard"

B,
Don't know how I missed this post. Too busy detecting I guess. ;D
Congrats on your new baby. Ahhhh, I remember those wonderful bottle & diaper days. Wait a minute, those both apply to myself now. ;)
Some neat finds. That 1878 IH has to be worth a few bucks, right? Only 1 year away from the Big Guy!
That stagecoach is a neat find. Any idea of the age yet? Early 1900's?
Way to go on your spoon additions. I finally found an old fork yesterday. ;D
Great hunt. Looking forward to seeing more from you on that site.

Now thats what I'm talkin about. Nice assortment of stuff. Makes a great day ! Thumbs-Up 2U.

Re: Recent Finds From "Spoon Graveyard"

Thanks Panzer, ModernMiner and SmokeDaddy!

MM -- TreasureTales guessed the stagecoach, which is more likely an English "Handsome Cab," is probably from the 1880s, which sounds pretty spot-on given the age of everything else I've been finding there. It seems like the place was heavily used from about 1860-1920.

Way to go on the fork! I've finally found a couple of dinner knives, but no forks yet. I think I've found 15 spoons and 2 knives there, so that's a pretty crazy ratio...

Thanks again for the congrats. Glad everyone keeps enjoying looking at these posts!

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

Thanks. Sadly I won't be back there again until fall. It's tick infested. :(
