The boat hook is correct. It isn't a horseshoe crab. It is pissed off though.

We pulled it out of the water but it didn't belong there.

We were crabbing in the upper Chesapeake and saw what we assumed was a crab swimming on the surface. When we got close we saw a bat treading water with its wings. I wouldn't bring it on the boat but I felt sorry for it.

We built it a raft and brought it close to shore with a favoring wind.

After I got home I did some Google research and discovered that bats have difficulty taking off from the ground, which is why they sleep upside down from a bit of a height. I doubt this tired out bat made it.

You certainly saved its life, but being injured, in the water, It may be sick with RABIES or (the dreaded) White-Nose Syndrome, that is killing MILLIONS of these little guys, back East.
