Arrows again:

Who think about to use arrows if the SHTF, should buy them now! They are cheap to get from china and don´t use much space to store them. Even when they have a screw at the end, it can be flattened and fixed into self made wood arrows. There are arrows around with 3 or 4 razor blades fixed on it but they are not to recommend! The blades are a one shot and break easy and if fragments still sticking in the flesh, you can hurt yourself very badly in mouth or stomach if you swallow them! Luck for you - you shot an animal and think you will survive now and die later on infected cuts in mouth or inside your body :laughing7: :icon_thumleft::icon_thumright: Classical points like on the attached pics are the best! They last long and can easily be sharpened again. Also with their weight you will be on the right side to make wood arrows with the correct weight and a good FOC. You can get those points from china for less than a $ on many sources.

good idea but the metal is way too thick and heavy. (I would n´t even use it on my strongest crossbow!) It will fly very ballistic and loose way too much energy very quickly. You would have to use such a strong bow which no normal man couldn´t pull to hunt just under 30 yards. Also, the more ballistic, the harder too aim!
So a little bit knowledge about ballistics and arrows would help to build the right effective arrow.
Anyway, there is a lot of other material out there which can be used as arrow heads without damaging other needed resources like metal saws etc! Who would use his wood axe to split bricks?! :laughing7: Always protect resources :icon_thumright:
With modern professional material it is hard enough for newbies to hunt, so a self made arrow will be almost a "one shot" and it is gone because it breaks or you can´t find it back. So why wasting other resources to built such heavy metal arrows? I mean, you make maximum 10 arrows out of such thick material and a good metal saw blade is gone.

Here is a pic that shows where the FOC has to be.
If you build your own arrows in a worst case scenario, you can play just a little bit with the arrow length if your tips are a little bit too heavy to get a better FOC.
A perfect FOC lies 3" from the middle directed to the front of an arrow. An arrow always has to be a little bit topheavy or it will change direction at the end of it´s flight.

just saw in the replies that he uses steel that´s 3,2 mm thick (1/8")! That´s thicker as my outdoor knife! Guess you can imagine it´s weight!

If the arrow breaks, his points WILL survive for sure :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7: :BangHead:

Bill,

Did you seen this?

Even my Idol Dave Canterbury makes it wrong :laughing7:

The notch is WAY WAY WAY to tight! The arrow still sticks in it when the bowstring is back OVER normal position and the vibrations will directly effect the arrow before it is gone out of the bow.
Also how he makes the Vanes is completely wrong and they will not have an stabilizing effect on the arrow because it will not make a spin on the arrow. Hard to hunt with it on more than 10 yards!
The (just 3!) vanes has to be on their complete length just one or 2 millimeter out of (same) direction (depends on length of the vanes) so it guaranties the arrow will spin around it´s own axis.
With straight vanes the arrows will start making very funny things after 10 yards :laughing7:

Good morning folks, hope all had a great Thanksgiving ! I've got 2 more days of fishing and diving. It's been a long grind of 5-6 hours of fishing and 4-5 hours of free diving and spear fishing. I'm wearing down and I'm sore all over. I'm averaging about 2-4 miles of swimming each day, followed by a lot of sail fishing. We run at least 6 lines and often times 8 lines in the water at once. Its intense and a lot to keep track of. We have had the best weather over the last couple weeks. Sunny with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the low 70s. Trying to spread myself between family, work, and the sawmill has proven to be exhausting. I cant wait for everyone to leave and go back to school and work. I'm hoping to have a break by Tuesday. It'll take a day on the couch to recover, and then maybe I can do a little treasure hunting. It's tough to have to work everday when you know that spanish treasure is popping up from the beach sands !!! Well it's time to get out there and catch some more sailfish and snappers. I got to fight one yesterday and it was a beast. It took me 30 minutes to land him and he almost stripped all the line off the reel before I could turn his head towards the boat. Usually I hook them and hand the rod over to the customer. No one wanted to tangle with this one so I got to enjoy the entire battle. See ya later people, and have a great day.

Tom,

Thanks for the heads up....the auction is tomorrow so no bids on the table yet. He showed a picture of various Viking arrowheads and circled the similar to the one posted which made it look legit. Mind you maybe that design was still in use during medieval times also.

I'll add the other picture shortly.

Hey Bill :icon_thumright:

If you hunt an animal with that one, it will die on blood poisoning!! :laughing7:

Is it real to buy? Don´t do it, it is restored and just started again to corrode from inside.

Btw: who says that it is viking? It is just a common medieval type and no one could say if it was made and used by vikings :icon_thumleft:

Hi Bill, as I said you find this arrow types everywhere in Europe so it is hard to say it is real viking. The sheet he published also don´t shows anything that says "viking" and it is nothing more than an suggestion.
Anyway, the arrow head is dead! You have to restore it again with electrolysis and desalination baths and there will not much be left after it! Some iron condition is terrible inside and not real to clean and stabilize (yet). If restored iron looks like this with new growing corrosion spots on it - fingers off!! That´s the reason why museums make a replica from important pieces when the iron is not to safe.

Forgotten: if you look at this broad heads on the left site, they are eastern European so this sheet is not showing specific viking style arrow heads!
Viking stuff is very popular at this time so many not so serious auctioneers working this way and show references that are simply fake or misleading.
