Yeah mate, thats kind of you to say but this is not similar in any fashion at all, infact not even close.
In your situation it sounds like logical judgement through experience. However I am sure if her daughters heart was dead set on you and you on her that her mother would have shared her reasoning, but also been happy for the two of you.
My inlaw and Parents; pure racist tards when it came to mixed relations. Her parents only saw White South African descendants who still owned ranches in South Africa. My parents only saw a Black Ethiopian exiled royal family who fled to Switzerland instead fighting back.
Her parents stepped back into the picture around the time my oldest kid was 2, my parents stepped in when my son was 3 and only met him once. My parents are of course gone now. My mother in law has not spoken to us for about 4 years now, they spoke with us every now and then, but I knew my father in law was dirty and as a hobby investigated him for a while, 9 years into it all on my spare time and with many others from many other agencies doing it as a hobby he landed him self a nice comfy spot in the pokey for 12 years from the first trial but is still waiting on the second investigation where he could land up to 2 more years if it goes to trial.
Mates that helped out just really wanted to see if I would actually keep my wife after it all. Heck my wife knew the entire time that I thought her father was a dirty person, and I used to tell her that if I ever caught his money going through certain channels I would not hesitate in making sure that the US gov got him first. My mates thought for sure she would leave me.
So we got word about 6 days before he was picked up that charges where coming and in four countries local authorities from each would be searching his properties and arresting him. So we had a grill party, I told my wife it was going down in front of everyone, which authorities would grab him, on what charges, what would stick, what they where fishing for that would not stick without a confession. Spilled the beans.
Day comes, I know its going down, very happy for it really. We are in Italy that morning out on the beach, wife is in the yak checking some traps. We all head up for lunch and she sees that she has tons of missed calls. Tells me about the calls she missed and I said that sounds about right, by now your father should be freaking out in jail, your mother likely in panic mode because she is worried about how to lie, your whore gold digging sister that only wishes she married into a wealthy South African family is worried about where her next meal and car will come from and your brother likely trying to call so he can hide from his mother and sister.
She says, well, you have that figured out and I do not really want to hear it, so I will turn my phone off. I said go on, but your brother is only 6 hours away, so he should be here soon. She says but if I do not answer, I told her I do not think he cares if we are here or not, he just wants away from them.
Wife says to the kids, get your things, we are going to the water park, we are leaving in five minutes. LOL My eldest daughter says in the car, is something wrong with you mama, I have wanted to come here since I can remember and you always say it is a waste of money because we already live on the beach and if I want to slide I can go slide on the wet sand and save money.
Wife says shut now, and enjoy the day, your uncle will be here soon because your father put grandfather in prison. My son pipes up and says I hope he does not think he can do something because Papa will make him cry again. Wife again is like shut up and have fun, no more talking until after we get there and you have a sun burn, then complain about your sun burn.
We get there and my wife tells me at the ticket counter all pissy, you better be right, these people are crazy, they want 94 Euro for all of us to get in. I told her I am right and we can afford, she snaps back and says I can afford to buy this place and fire everyone if it is not worth it. I told the ticket lady, sorry she is pissy this morning, just found out her father was arrested a couple hours ago and will likely not make it out of jail alive. Wife tells me shut up before I rip your foot off and stick it in your mouth and make you walk around the rest of the day like that. Said you wont look smart then, just like a big fool with a size 18 in your mouth.
Kids and I where laughing so hard at her.
Anyway mate, not the same, yours was based on love and care, mine was based on ignorance and racism.

A bit of a similar experience I had back in the 1970's my sister who I was sharing an apartment with at the time worked with a gal of Indian descent. Well I got set up with her kid sister this gal was drop dead gorgeouus kind of along the lines of a young Halle Barry or Whitney Houston.
Me being of celtic, ie; Irish/Scottish descent well her mom was dead set against us getting involved in a long term arrangement, ie: marriage, etc....
I was upset at the time but as I got older I realized what the issue was her mom was born in India and her dad was British and no doubt they probably suffered a lot of discrimination having a mixed marriage probably back in the 1950's.
I'll have to send him a soda or something of that nature so I don't run afoul of gold boy's blond custodian.....
