always just used a 22 for deer back in Texas. Those white tail drop just as good with a head shot and the ranches where far to big for any game warden to get a hair up theirass. Heck we took about 60 deer a year back then, never even heard of a hunting permit until I got to the city for university. One of my class mates said he needed to stop and get his hunting permit, first thing crossed my mind was to ask him if he was born and raised in the city, he was.
Later found out that a hunting permit was actually required. Very small town was about the closest thing to us, and the local sheriff was also the school history teacher and his side arm was a two shot 45. But he always had his M1 Grand at his side, in class in the classroom gun rack, in his truck, where ever.
When was the last time you heard of a classroom gun rack. Man that was a while ago, but we had bush cats and other odd ends that would give you a go.
I remember when I was in the 6th class, the neighbouring ranch got some new owners, only 4,000 acres and they where sort of just hobby ranching, city folk, nothing serious. Their boy Nathan came to school, and he was told on because he did not bring a gun to school. Bus only dropped you off at the head of the dirt road, still had a good hour before you walked home. History teacher asked me if I would walk him home and pick him up every day until he got him self a gun. Man his parents where sofa king confused, got him a single action 22 mag. We all thought it was really cool of course, but he was only about 20 feet worth a heck with it.
Oddjob,
Glad to see you back on board...what you been up to?
Never heard of a classroom gunrack but it was common for kids to bring their guns in a pickup rack.
I don't care for rimfires. I do have a .22 .Montgomery Ward .22 bolt action. Lost the five shot clip. When we left Colorado I traded my bronco saddle for the .22 cause we left our horses with my brother. That was a high pommel beautiful saddle. Wish I had kept it.
Down here these hillbilly types will still take a deer when they want meat and I see no problem with that.
Getting tired of of the constant fees, regulations.
What area of Texas you grow up in? My dad was born outside of Lubbock. So I am prone to exaggeration at times

We lived in a small town outside the capital city and everyone that had a pick up had a gun rack. Was a normal scene to see pick ups parked in our high school parking lot with the gun racks full of rifles and shotguns. School shootings were unheard of back then.
