I did not read this in the article, but wouldn't the original country of origin, Spain, also have a claim? It seems to me, that even though it's been over 300 years, it is Spain's lost treasure. On a much smaller scale for comparison, if you or I was to find a class ring, we would search and return it to the original owner. Do you see where I am going?

You have a good point pretty much all the Spanish sunken treasure was stolen from the people of Mexico and South America to begin with.
Of course that won't stop Spain from trying to claim it or a large part of it since it was on a Spanish vessel when it sunk.
