This is one of the best finds that I have and it started off as just another day at the creek. Yesterday, I went with my wife and daughter along with my sister and her husband to cool off from this 100+ degree heat we are having here in Southwest Georgia. Shortly after we got in the water, which was less than knee deep, my sister pointed out two flint tools she spotted laying on the creek bed. These finds told me that there was likely points in the area so I started looking as well. I began running my fingers through the sand and finding pottery shards. After I worked that area with little luck, I decided to move down stream and try another spot. I had to pull some limbs out of the way to get a new area cleaned. Thats when this pipe came up. I did not find any points but thats o.k. with this taking thier place! This will likely be the center piece in my collection for quite some time. Any thoughts or comments are welcomed!!

Gosh, that is beyond Banner material, assuming it is an authentic period relic. I'd be in that creek looking around for what else washed up for the rest of the summer! Be careful not to violate any state laws regarding digging for Indian relics, as the "authorities" could make an excuse to confiscate it from you. I would hate to see that. It should be yours regardless of whether you choose to display it at a museum at some point.

Do you live near any artifact shows where you can get it authenticated?

I doubt very much it would paper. I believe your story that you found it, I just don't want you to be crushed to find out it isn't authentic. Way too many red flags on this piece. I do hope by chance that it would be real, sorry to be a buzzkill.

i had one just like that back in the 80's :laughing9: j/k..............awesome find and a true banner in my book

Dude, this is awesome. Great find, congrats. I look forward to seeing what else you find at this spot.

That is an amazing piece!!! Definitely BANNER worthy to the max!

Although I know you don't intend to sell it, but there is no telling what that would bring from a collector. It's auction worthy.

Can you discern what type of stone or clay it's made of and is that stone native to your area? I've only so far read the first page of replies so some of my questions may be answered further in the thread. But the reason I asked about the stone being local is because that piece looks to be from an area much further south of Georgia. By much further I mean Mexico or Central, or South America. It screams Aztec or Mayan.

South Georgia was the home to the Miccosukee, Timucua, Yammasee and some Muskogee Creeks. So it's very possible it was brought back to the area by a raiding party of one of those tribes or through trade by those tribes with the Aztec or Mayans. But my bet would be a raiding party because it looks to be a ceremonial piece. They tribes further south weren't likely to trade ceremonial pieces because they meant to much spiritually to them.

No matter, it is a beautiful and very special find. Congratulations!

That is BEAUTIFUL! Looks Aztec! Well done..... I should spend a few more days there, perhaps with a snorkel and goggles! Well Saved!

Great condition. It must have recently kicked out of the bank and not been in the water long. Probably a site with all the pottery sherds.

Congratulations Sir! Nicest Mississippian pipe I have seen.
