One hit wonders

All forums have inactive members, I am probably a member of a few myself that I signed up and barely posted.
I once took a 7 year hiatus [not from metal detecting, but posting about it], might happen again who knows ?

Obviously, someone who signs up and doesn't post has a very limited interest in the hobby, which may or may not change in the future.
They may have signed up just to browse without being bombed by ads.

As I was doing my morning tour of the active topics this morning I stumbled into a thread where the member joined in 2010, and today was the member's first post. I'd have to go back into all the posts to find it again, but certainly thought that odd.

That's what called the 7 yr itch then. :laughing7:

I could write a book, but I'll try not to. I can only speak for myself. I'm intimidated and easily embarrassed. Here's a few examples.

1. This site has a ratio of 10:1 males to females. I'm female. Intimidated.
2. I'm new to this and know very little about what I'm finding in the ground. So, when I post asking what something is and get a reply, "Looks like trash to me." I'm embarrassed. Actually may have thrown away the best relic I could have found because of this. I didn't post it because I was recently embarrassed, and instead asked my husband. He coincidently said the same phrase. Really crushed my spirit, so I pitched it.
3. When I look at my thread and see hundred plus views, but only get maybe one reply. I have noticed this happens to all threads to some degree. Who are these lurkers and why ? Intimidated.
4. I am flakey. :tongue3:
Wrightdigger, Your point # 1, I never have encountered a woman detectorist, very glad to have you here, most of my wife's friends think my detecting is "cute"?, again, really happy to have you and others like you into detecting. #2, remember the saying, one man's trash is another mans treasure? (or woman's). Detector people such as all of us here have stuff we've found that WE like where other's have little or no interest. But then those of us here are all in are own little world that most others don't understand, and that's OK, we like it here. #3, they simply may not have had anything to offer?, and #4, as pepperj said, No, because you are on T-Net, along with the rest of us. By the way, seems you've just received more than just one comment on your previous comment. Welcome to our own little "unique" part of the world.

I have noticed this too. Look at any thread from a couple years back, or page 100 of What is It. A huge amount of the people starting these threads haven't been active since shortly after they posted them. I can't count how many times someone posted something great, people asked for other photos, or some new information, but the person had already left the forum before they could add these things. I remember that shortly after I joined in February 2013, the number of registered members according to the home page was at around 50,000 or so. The funny thing is, if you look at any recent thread on here, very few people leaving replies joined before that date, and are not part of that 50,000, and 50,000 is a huge number! Out of around 50,000 members, there is a very small amount of currently extremely active members, part of that number. Perhaps people don't have the attention span to be an active member of a forum, or the interest, that has happened to me before. Or they might be part of another big forum, which happened to me when joining another metal detecting forum at the same time I was a member here. Maybe they are intimidated by some of the incredible things they see on the banner, and figure that they can never find anything that good. It is hard to say why people do anything they do, unless you are them.

Here is page 100 of What is It?, from around exactly a year ago, how many thread starters' usernames do you actually recognize, and how many have more than around 20 or 30 posts?

Also, I give this forum credit for getting me into metal detecting. I joined as a coin roll hunter, and saw all the great things people were finding on here and decided to buy a metal detector. My first year of metal detecting was pretty bad, I had one good find in my first week, then almost nothing the rest of the year (not even silver). I was lucky enough though to accidentally stumble into one of the oldest sites in my town next year, which was in the woods behind the school I was metal detecting.

My writing and photography skills also improved a bit since joining Treasurenet, here are a couple of complete newbie threads I started almost 5 years ago :laughing7:.

So thanks TreasureNet, for opening me up to an amazing hobby!

Another possibility with OHWs are that they start detecting/collecting on a whim that fizzles about as quickly as it started. I won't stop until the day comes when I can't go anymore.

My story is similar. I was researching a bottle and was led to the site. Made a post and was impressed with the information I received. Felt I was getting my money's worth, so I spent the $20.00 to become a charter member. Made a comment on another thread of how my detector had been shelved. Received a PM telling me not to give up. Next thing I know, I'm addicted to all of it. It hasn't quite been six months yet! So, technically, I'm still a detectorist in training.

I hope I don't fizzle out! I don't do FB. Too much drama stuff on it. Besides, it's a lot nicer meeting strangers and becoming friends because of the same interests you hold.

Ah the old saying goes "Its better to wear out-than rust out" It's one thing about this hobby has over a lot of other activities one can do it everyday, or when the body and mind crave a little digging. Seems like minded folks never get tired of seeing items recovered out of the dirt either.

I guess in a way I am one of those people, when I first realized that there were treasure forums, I did sign on to a couple, then I fell into the Treasure Net Forum, and haven't returned to the others at all since. Treasure Net has become my early morning routine.

Yup on the morning routine-beats reading the doom and gloom of the world affairs. Rather read about a find, or lack of getting one, than some war.

I also see ones that have been around, gotten banner finds, asked what it is, and never replied to the ID. "CRICKETS"

Well, pepperj, as a result of this thread and its dialogue, I ventured over to some of the threads that had hundred plus views but no comments. I may not have much to contribute, but I at least can acknowledge that I have read their post. I've also started passing out more likes, even if I don't have anything to say. Thank you for helping me overcome my own issues and hopefully, it will help some OHW' s stick around and enjoy all this site has to offer.

We should be taking our hats off to you for being honest and acknowledging posts and comments. There's nothing worse to a query than those "Crickets"

Guilty as charged! When I first posted, I didn't know what I was doing. Still don't get it all, but now I subscribe to the thread and have it sent to my email if someone responds. How do you guy's do it? Sometime's I just plain forget, cause I'm thinking of where I'm going to dig next:laughing7:

Hope I don't forget this one:laughing7:

I use the Tapatalk app on my phone. It will send you an alert when someone responded to a thread you are subscribed to or quotes your post. It also let's you know if you have a pm. For me it's much easier to download pictures from my phone and keep up. Plus I'm never around my computer.

Well I think that most are guilty of this slip once in awhile and it's just life grabbing us up again and not allowing time to follow up. I'm guilty also for not following up on replies at times. A friend asked me a few yrs back now"How's it was going?"
I replied "I'm was just running around putting out fires"
His reply "No, Think your just setting them"
That right there set me on a new coarse of finishing up big projects and quit taking on more. The good news I have enough big project work to keep myself going till 2020. BTW I've been retired for 10+yrs.:icon_scratch:

I go to quick links and the subscribed threads. I look for any blues which indicates unread posts. Then after I take care of those I peruse the forums to see what catches my eye.

I just can't seem to get used to tapa talk. It did come in handy when we were having those log in issues. I still have log out issues, but that doesn't throw me into withdraws so no biggy.:laughing7:
