Old photo can someone explain

And the photographer would have the subjects freeze in a comfortable pose while the photograph was being taken, it took several seconds or more for the film (silver plate?) to be exposed. If the subject moved the got a blurry images and quadruple exposures, the Masonic clue is a good one.

I think these guys are academics or politicians.

The guy in the back row on the left looks like an aging Victor Berger of Wisconsin - the first Socialist to serve in the United States Congress.

I worked that angle a little. If it is I would expect to see Eugene Debs in the photo - and he is not - unless it was taken after his death in 1926 and before Berger's death in '29.

Frankly, these old guys could be anybody.

It is interesting to me that none of them are young, they all have facial hair, and they are outside without their hats. Are a couple of them in evening wear? White tie?
