New Treasure Hunting TV show

In what world does this exist?

Roy,

I didn't miss anything. What you seem to be missing is as Deducer put it "In what world does that exist?". It doesn't. Nobody EVER gets that offer, unless you already have a proven record of finding treasure. I think the thing is, if someone PRIVATELY wanted to fund me on a treasure hunting expedition, that is a different story. Depending on their terms, I would be all in. Its just that when you get networks, production companies, and lawyers involved, then come the bureaucrats, law enforcement, Forest Service, politicians, and million more know nothings. Then if you find something, and its televised, along comes a million more nasty things. Nope, you can keep your piece of fame. I will take anonymity and the ability to keep whatever I find.

Mike

This world, and I told you I did sign one agreement that is now expired. You don't have to believe me either, it is no skin off my hindparts - but in future when you are approached keep in mind that you are able to negotiate, you do not have to sign a contract that is not to your liking. I was aware of at least some of the issues that had soured other deals for others, as happened with the legends of the Superstitions series. It is not possible to foresee every possible way to get screwed of course, but you have some wiggle room. Just remember they sought you out, rather than the reverse. If you were pitching to the producers then it would be considerably less negotiating room available.

Roy,

EXACTLY like I said before. You signed a "Shopping Agreement", because if you had signed a final contract we would be watching your show on TV. Like I said, I also signed a Shopping Agreement with some very nice people who understood what I explained about treasure hunting to them. My guess is that same thing happened to both of our shows. Too authentic. Lots of research. Lots of hiking. Lots of beautiful scenery. A little bit of action every so often. A series can get away with beautiful scenery and not finding anything for so long before people lose interest. That's why they have a formula. Completely different from a real TV Show or Movie. I did stunts for three movies in New Orleans. Two were for backup stunts (uncredited), but the movie that made me SAG Eligible was Pelican Brief. While still uncredited, I had a great fight scene in a bar in the French Quarter. The stunt director liked it so much, he put me on the books for doing three full days of stunts. That makes you SAG Eligible. Here is a still from the movie:

They paid me near scale, but they left out most of the fight scene. I reach out and grab the CIA Guy and throw him into the bar. Me and two other guys punch him back and forth between us, and I throw him through the french doors into a bunch of garbage cans. They cut the scene as I was reaching for him. I wish they would have paid me less and left in the whole fight scene. Yeah, that scene was about 70 pounds ago. LOL

They are not approaching you to negotiate in good faith, they are approaching you to exploit you.

Let's say they had $5,000/ep budgeted for signing a talent to head a show about treasure hunting in the Black Hills and you fit that mold perfectly, you can bet their opening offer is going to be $500/ep. They cut every corner of the production so that they can put as much money as they can in their own pockets, in case the show flames out and crashes.

If the show takes off, you will have the wherewithal to negotiate deals for contract renewal.

And if your show becomes what in venture capital lingo is called an "unicorn," i.e., a mega-hit like "Oak Island" you do the smart thing and demand producer status, like Marty and Ricky Lagina did. That puts you in the game for receiving a good slice of residuals, syndication rights, and international sales, and you have more control over creative decisions.

The Laginas are undoubtedly millionaires at this point (although Marty was already a millionaire prior to OI). And the kicker is that the Canadian Government (through NSBI) now funds a good chunk of the show.

Mike now I want to see the Pelican Brief! Very cool! Now I can tell people I have a friend who is in the movies! :occasion14:

Agreed, and amen. It can work when both parties are sort of 'using' each other, to profit thereby. The proposed series was not in the Black Hills, although I did agree (verbally) to an interview for a very small TV outfit based in the UK and don't expect that one will materialize, the one I signed for was not in the USA at all. The network boys were happy and we were waiting for the tickets to arrive to start filming when Legends of the Superstitions suddenly crashed and burned, and the plug was pulled just as suddenly. For us, it was a way to go after something we could not have done otherwise, the pay and other percs were just frosting on the proverbial cake, as you can not take guns into this particular country and it is somewhat dangerous due to drug lords and smuggling. I had no thoughts of the series 'taking off' like Oak Island etc, but if lightning did strike it would only provide more time and access - all good in my eye. When Loke is allowed back on here you can him ask if I was lying, he was in the deal.

For most treasure hunters I would agree with the warnings to simply NOT do it. You will likely end up pissed off and if it airs, you have hordes of new competition to deal with in your own hunt area.

Now that its getting all Hollywood in here... Years ago I got to light Lauren Hutton’s cigarette from across the bar i used to work at. It was about 4 months after she had her infamous motorcycle wreck with her pals Dennis Hopper and Jeremy Irons. I used to work at a brewery restaurant next door to the TN Aquarium and we had quite a few famous visitors. Anyways, I could tell she was still recovering from broken hip/legs and in quite a bit of pain.. but it didn’t stop her from ambling up to my bar and sneaking a smoke while her grandkids were playing at the pool tables. Classically beautiful and very charming lady. I also brought a cup of soup to George Carlin the following year at the same restaurant..

yeah she didn’t quite look like this when i met her but that’s how I prefer to remember the occasion ;)

Of all the pots of gold that people chase, the one containing the lure of fame and wealth is probably the worst, and the least satisfying, I would say.

The most successful treasure finds are the ones you never hear about.

I have seen the last episode " Mysteries of the Superstition Mountains " about Senner's gold stolen from the Mammoth mine and buried near the west peak. Fortunately, Jean Felice showed the original Senner's map and this was enough to find out where the gold was buried.
I have to admit the map has some tricks but was easy to decrypt. Another cache for the rainy days.

marius..do you mean jack san felice?

Which is why they will never ever find anything on Oak Island. You have to congratulate them on being shrewd enough to make something out of nothing for 7 straight seasons.

Gotta take your hat off to those hucksters.

Kinda like that one old crook detective from PA on that Lost Dutchman Show......leading them out there on a long walk following a hand drawn map

Hi

I think this could be a good opportunity for someone here,

I have been a member here for about 15 years, I don’t post as much as I used to, but I often come to read your amazing stories. I have been doing shipwreck research for nearly 20 years and for the last 8 years I have been the Senior Researcher for one of the leading marine salvage company who has successfully found and recovered over $600 million dollars’ worth of treasure. Currently I also work as a consultant a multi-award-winning international Film and Television production company who works with broadcasters like the BBC, Discovery, CNN, Channel 4, Nat Geo, ITV, History, A&E, Syfy, TLC and ID.

Right now I am working with the production team of a new treasure hunting TV show that will air in one of the top-rated channels. We are in the process of finding 8 to 12 stories for 60-minute episodes. It is a reality show, so I am looking for people who are actively searching for a treasure, or people who have done research and have found evidence that can lead to finding a treasure. If you think your story would make a great episode, send me a PM

And of course, this opportunity is only for those who can and want to share their story.

Using Bill Cooper's 35 mm photos from space right?

600 Million in treasure.......hmmmmm

Haven't heard about that one yet

Anyone else here ?

Not me, but there's a new series starting up in the fall....."Lust for Gold"
I see you deleted your other post though.....so, does that mean no breaking news story for us to look forward to ?
You still claiming these are three wagon loads of KGC gold, Eldo?
hmmmmm......looks like water tanks to me....whatcha think ?

Milking the legends.

This video has a different approach

Thanks chaggy, getting to facetime a member from the production team of "gold rush" was amazing. I knew exactly who they were. I know we will need archaelogist s on site, and hope they atleast give you the offer. I dont know if I seen you in "beneath the seas" book, but we shared a common interest in maritime archaelogy. I Aced mine in college. Im glad i took a chance with you, and thanks again for passing me up to the production team.

Good luck & hope it works out for you.

For those who doubt it, yes this was a real scouting for a production.

I pitched and was progressing as they were interested but as things became clearer I assessed my story was not conducive to fitting their production format so I withdrew: totally my decision.

A very common experience apparently, and a frequently chosen path as well freeman .

Thanks, I personally like the footage from "gold rush" "parkers trail". I simply cant produce the quality of the film, air, pic color, etc... And the government had been ignoring me with this site for years, so I really do appreciatie this oportunity. Now I just need the "BLM" to stop rioting , and the government to open back up so the production team can fly in.
