They don't even care about that; the bottom line is the dollar.
If you were to ask Julie Auerbach of GGL (who is in charge of creative content) to point to the map of the US and locate the Superstitions, she will probably point to Colorado. She is only interested in buying content that GGL by consensus, thinks has a better than average rate of success.
The creative behind LSM look at shows such as "Ax Men" or "Gold Rush" replete with drama, and attempt to repeat that same formula, assuming that the rate of success will be high because they are repeating something that has worked in the past.
Every reality show for the last 20 years is basically a repeat of the original "Survivors" show which is considered to be responsible for the explosion of reality shows since the late '90's.
I think combining history and reality TV is just a bad combination. That's trying to reach across too wide a demo.
Deducer you are correct and it is all about the money.
Sure when Gold Rush came out I watched the first years season. the next year, I watched it again. I didn't even watch the 3rd year because I found it to be ridiculous, I quit watching it because of several things, particularly stupid drama. Sure many people may like that sort of stuff and find it entertaining. The only one I was interested in seeing before I quit watching it all together was Parker. Yeah, he is young, not as experienced but at least he didn't have the mentality of the Hoffmans drama, and it was a good showing Parker and his grandfather.
Yeah, also I feel for the Hoffman's crew. I wouldn't trust Jack Hoffman to be counting out the gold in hiding all by his lonesome self, especially if I was to get a cut of it! But that is not my deal! Before Gold Rush, Jack had some pretty shady deals he had going and it isn't that hard to find out the info on him. And it certainly would not fall under "trustworthy"!
But I had not watched Gold Rush since 2012 and that ought to say something. Sure I love seeing gold, who doesn't? I certainly have no interest in watching Honey Boo Boo, Appalachian Outlaws, Naked and Afraid, Amish Mafia, etc, or any of those shows. I would much rather watch an old western or read up on some real treasure hunting, but hey, that is just me!
