I hope I dont sound too demanding, look ed, but we really do need better pics. I know you have more important things to do but we also expect you to reply.

I also am giving the poster the benefit of the doubt. I can see what may be the brass ferrule. It looks as if the steel was cleaned but I see pitting and maybe a face. Thats all I can see.

Why cant you ignore the ones that are ridiculing you and reply to the others? You are not being fair to those of us trying to help you. The pics dont have to be better, just larger and not cropped.

And please dont keep editing. Just reply as you go along. Thanks.

You post in what is it & then never respond?I never doubted that you may have found something old-because everything lost in this world is still here on earth, some just deeper than others....

With all the humor flying in the thread, there is something about this that has lodged in the back of my head as to what it is. I just realized, but can't put a word or more complete description to it, but it is something that is pounded in the the bank to tie a boat to, or something similar. I know I have seen something like it. Some kind of ground anchor?

This isn't going to turn out well for me, so back to fun and frivolities.

he sent me a PM a couple of days ago, not sure why he hasnt posted this info on the topic...
thanks for understanding this. the reason i even posted here was that this the first place that looked as if there might be experts here. then imagine what i thought when i got ridiculed. anyway first this is no scam.i didnt even know who Hernando Cortez was till i found the name and date on item. then i googled it and by no coinsidence his time line showed that his last expedition was between 1534 to 1536. that would make it 400 sum years old. where i found this is a very remout coastal canyon in central ca.the geological servey made a specific comment on the report. the comment was that this canyons rock out cropings were unchanged since the earth formed. the stream does not collect silt becauseof the 4 to 7 percent down grade.this told me that was the reason it wasnt buried. i found it loged between two rocks nearstream.

If the poster was serious about getting answers he/she would have had all the answers they need by now. At the very least they are there own worst enemy.
WE sort thing in minutes on this site with the right pictures - simple.

I was thinking the same thing and was looking online for it, it is very familiar but for the life of me I can't
remember where I saw it.

The thing to remember here is "anyway first this in no scam" :icon_thumright:

I am not an expert nor do I play one, but that thing is too crude to be ANYTHING Spanish. It looks like it was made in China.

I auditioned for the role of an expert, but didn't get it. Didn't know enough about anything.

And what happened to the "knife or letter opener" in the title of the post? The knife is no longer a possibility? Personally, I would rather carry a knife into the wilds of central Calif. than a letter opener. Unless Hernando was expecting an important missive. Those wax seals are just so tough to get through. And a paper cut? Just too much for El Conquistidor to handle.

While the coast of Central California (read: Big Sur) did have a prosperous mining community the only thing of value to be found in the remote canyons there now are patches of wacky tabacky. Certainly not much in the way of a harbor or port to anchor a ship and then be able to row ashore.

The documented anchorage has 3 locations between SF Bay to about Eureka...

Journal is about as flaky and unreliable as it gets.

I am not sure why everyone has treated you so badly Ed. Maybe it was the foot in mouth comment. If Jeff of Pa gets wind of this, he will straighten it out real quick. We usually try to welcome new members.

I thought this had died an untimely death, but it seems to have reached the relm of the UNDEAD. Stake, please. Unless, of course, the original poster would be so kind as to meet the specific, reasonable and oft repeated requests of Big Cy. If you do nothing else, answer those and I will have only the most warm and cherishing thoughts for you!

Absolutely. I try to give new members the benefit of the doubt in case of a misunderstanding and I believe Jeff would too. Right now Im just as confused as Monty.
