Hi All,

We were hunting in the woods in NJ at a new site this past weekend and came across this chest on a steel tube in the woods. My brother went to investigate it and started yelling thinking he’d been attacked by bees. After a speedy retreat we went in to reassess the situation and realized it wasn’t bees – but stinging plants. Some cousin of the nettle I imagine. Both of us and our hunting buddy were covered with some kind of biblical boils after a second attempt – we gave up.
Anyway – we were wondering if anybody has ever seen anything like this and knows whether it’s worth investigating. I asked the local police and they said they have no idea what it is.

We turned up this assortment of artifacts at another site in the same county. Supposedly some rev war activity there but we’re not sure on the age of the artifacts. Posted a few of em in “what is it?”

Looks like a small oxidized musketball,, a larger iron projectile, an iron buckle, a copper button and a know idea what it is but looks like a small bronze jar with engravings.

Thanks for looking and good luck digging.

I haven't had a chance to poke around that box, but if anyone else wants to look into it I'm happy to provide directions.

Is it acceptable to just post locations on here or is that frowned upon (legal issues?)

thanks

Shoot, I thought I was about to find out what's in Pandora's Box.

At least now you know what nettles look like... and you won't end up using them for toilet paper some day. ahem

Check with your local county forester. Might be a box for research for pollination or some other college study.

Do you know someone who works for the electric, telephone, TV, or a tree trimming company.
They have spikes for climbing up trees and poles.
It would be easier than taking a ladder into this site.
It would also cause no damage to anything for someone to just climb up to it and get a close look and inspection of it.
My brother was a telephone lineman for many years.
I have two nephews who are linemen for electric companys.
I have seen some of these guys actually run up a tree or pole in seconds.
Good Luck

I'm just your average idiot but that IS an old trunk! Look at the corners. But why in a tree? And it looks like there is a square hole cut into the end, why would someone do that? I would give up on birdbox or high tech anything, why would someone put a high tech device in an old beat up trunk? To fool someone into thinking theres not a scientific device in there? That doesn't make sense, to me that would just make me all the more curious. Is there a way to get across the creek to get another view? Is the pole wood or metal? I am soooo curious!!!! I'm in Philly, if it's anywhere near me I'll check it out? ??? :tard:

Hey guys, re-read the first post "We were hunting in the woods in NJ at a new site this past weekend and came across this chest on a steel tube" STEEL TUBE! climbing spikes will not work, it is not just a odd chest, somehow someone got a big STEEL TUBE out there that the chest is attached to the top of. Boy, I hope someone finds out what the heck this is. I live in NJ and it sounds like something for the magazine 'Weird NJ'

You can go up a steel post with a stand-up-sit-down type of hunting tree climber/tree stand. And they are fairly safe to use. I use the tree lounge.

Pretty odd find but I would suggest to use great caution if you fool with it. I know some of us were joking about Jimmy Hoffa being inside, but there could be human remains in it, or some whacko could have set up a bomb with a booby trap for the un-lucky finder. In the old days there were "traps" made to fire a shot into the unlucky critter that took the bait, and home-made death-trap contraptions using cheap single-shot guns (usually a 22 but sometimes a shotgun) so BE CAREFUL. It is likely some kind of nesting box, but you never know what will turn up in the woods in Jersey! (A few years back some whacko was rigging up mailboxes with guns inside to shoot anyone that opened them, for one example of the "art" of the homicidal.)

Check with your local wildlife department. Back when the "save the whales" thing got started, people started putting up all kinds of things for nests. Around here we find old nail kegs up in trees. Never found a whale in one though!! Tony

I'd go with the owl or other large bird habitat, as the purpose
for the thing.
Meanwhile - the stinging nettles and all - - reminds me
of the "curse of the mummy!"

No fool would be dumb enough to "hide" a treasure in plain sight like that.

Being that close to the water, it looks like a Wood Ducks nest. Beautiful bird.
They nest near the water and kick those babies into the water when they are ready.
Normally they live in the woods and feed on the water. Gnewt
