Hi All,

We were hunting in the woods in NJ at a new site this past weekend and came across this chest on a steel tube in the woods. My brother went to investigate it and started yelling thinking he’d been attacked by bees. After a speedy retreat we went in to reassess the situation and realized it wasn’t bees – but stinging plants. Some cousin of the nettle I imagine. Both of us and our hunting buddy were covered with some kind of biblical boils after a second attempt – we gave up.
Anyway – we were wondering if anybody has ever seen anything like this and knows whether it’s worth investigating. I asked the local police and they said they have no idea what it is.

We turned up this assortment of artifacts at another site in the same county. Supposedly some rev war activity there but we’re not sure on the age of the artifacts. Posted a few of em in “what is it?”

Looks like a small oxidized musketball,, a larger iron projectile, an iron buckle, a copper button and a know idea what it is but looks like a small bronze jar with engravings.

Thanks for looking and good luck digging.

I think I can solve the mystery. That's a nesting box for an osprey or some other raptor. Some of them are monitored with video cameras inside, (kinda like Big Brother, only for birds ;D ), in wildlife areas to keep track of breeding.
do the birds open the lid to nest ...lol

The chest probably contains instruments for monitoring the water levels in the stream.

That's exactly what I thought when i saw the photos. As to opening it, pulling down etc etc - I would say the reason its being put up high in a secure box is to stop yahoo's from tampering with it. I say go ahead and ask all the departments you like to see if they know what it is but if you don't get an answer, think twice about interfering with the box. If it did contain important instruments or the secret nesting site for the ivory billed woodpecker no good can come from opening it. As most people have said its not going to be treasure.

I'm not saying that you have any intention to interfere with it but I think some people on the forum are a little too quick to come up with suggestions from the safety of their armchairs when any negative ramifications will ultimately fall squarely on your shoulders. I know, I know, everyone loves a mystery........ ::)

Could this be it?

# Barn Owls need to hunt in open country, so boxes should be placed at the edges of fields or on barns with lots of open space around them.
# »Barred Owls prefer forested habitat, particularly near streams or wetlands, although they seem to be doing well in forested suburban situations. Their boxes should be about 20' or higher up on a tree.
# »The box should be bolted to the pole (or poles) with three 5-1/2" bolts drilled all the way through the pole prior to sinking the pole in the ground. Have the threaded ends to the bolts on the outside of the box so they don't protrude into the box itself. This will reduce the chance that the young might be injured when researchers reach into the box.

C'mon, don't you recognize a TREE TRUNK when you see one? ::)

TREE TRUNK........ Now thats funny !!!

VPR

Yeah, that's hilarious!!!

If it's not a nesting box, which I tend to agree with, then somebody put this out there to mess with people and are getting big laughs right about now.

Gypsy moth or longhorn beetle monitoring trap?

Wood duck nesting box?

Evil, bloodthirsty ventriloquist's dummy inhabited by a manitou spirit just bairly captured by Jesuits and trapped above the soil that gives it strength and waiting sleeplessly and eagerly to suck the soul out of the unfortunate box opener.

Tree trunk - Oh, that was a good one.

Charlie P could be on to something with the Gypsy moth or long horn beetle idea. Different agencies use baited traps to monitor infestations of insects that are harmful to trees, plants, or crops. They are usually put up high like that to keep them from being tampered with. If you get up to examine it there sould be information, phone #s, etc. on it identifying who placed it.

That's just weird, I do agree that it's probably not any real treasure, but I'd still have to see what was in it. I just don't think I'd be able to stop twitching until I figured out a way to peek inside.

I doubt a Gyp moth trap,I have set hundreds and monitered them over the years. Gyp traps are triangular card tubes baited with a pheremone and usually green with printing on the outside. about 10 in long and 4in to the side. most are set where they can be easily checked, not in a nettle patch. Been there done that.!!!!!Bob
