Hi All,

We were hunting in the woods in NJ at a new site this past weekend and came across this chest on a steel tube in the woods. My brother went to investigate it and started yelling thinking he’d been attacked by bees. After a speedy retreat we went in to reassess the situation and realized it wasn’t bees – but stinging plants. Some cousin of the nettle I imagine. Both of us and our hunting buddy were covered with some kind of biblical boils after a second attempt – we gave up.
Anyway – we were wondering if anybody has ever seen anything like this and knows whether it’s worth investigating. I asked the local police and they said they have no idea what it is.

We turned up this assortment of artifacts at another site in the same county. Supposedly some rev war activity there but we’re not sure on the age of the artifacts. Posted a few of em in “what is it?”

Looks like a small oxidized musketball,, a larger iron projectile, an iron buckle, a copper button and a know idea what it is but looks like a small bronze jar with engravings.

Thanks for looking and good luck digging.

jeff of PA, just read your questions , missed em the first time. I didn't check for wires or anything like that but maybe your right. Maybe some kind of scientific equipment. I'll check it out when I head back over there.

thanks for the idea

I think I can solve the mystery. That's a nesting box for an osprey or some other raptor. Some of them are monitored with video cameras inside, (kinda like Big Brother, only for birds ;D ), in wildlife areas to keep track of breeding.

If thats the case.

Look around for a sign.

Not sure but I would think there would be a Sign warning of Tampering if
still in use.

I know what we would do with that thing. Get the Grizzly in that creek, pull the winch out, throw it around that thing and pull it down. I'm assuming you can get back there with a 4-wheeler if it's near a utility road. Borrow a Friend's and tear that sucker down!

Wait a minute. Tear it down? Who does the land belong to? Who might the box belong to. I think I would do some non-destructive investigating before I went out and tore it down. Otherwise you might end up making all MDers look bad and end up in jail.

I agree. You already talked to the Police.

IF A reprt comes in the Box was Destroyed or Removed,
They will then be Intrested.

Check it out, But unless your Sure it's abandond
don't mess with it or it's contents unless
it's contents are Illegal or Private enough,
the owner can't report it.

And Wear Gloves.

Paul 1410 - its not as high as it looks - maybe 35 feet. Its about a 3/4 mile hike from the nearest paved road and only a few hundred feet from an old utility road.

Thanks for the reply, randazzo.
It's difficult to estimate dimensions with out something for scale in the pics. I would have thought the box was no more than 20 ft from the ground.

Good luck in your quest.
Keep us posted.

I personally don't think it's a bird box

it looks more like
22852634.thw.jpg

except the handles are recessed into the box and there are a few more clasps added to the side by the handles.
Maybe it was military equipment for gathering weather info?

I do know I'd be climbing that thing to check it out =D just try to push the lid open with a stick once you get the clasps off..
don't need a claymore in the face xD

Well said plebah, But a peak inside wouldent hurt would it?
"I know lets hide the treasure on a pole in the woods" now thats funny ;D ;D ;D
Not trying to be smart alick but this is just to wierd. I say "opener up" but leave it where you found it, wonder how many folks have looked inside so far.

It looks like an ordinary travel trunk, Do they hunt Bears and cats in your area, if yes, I would suggest a cheap alternative of a bait box, If they do not, I would suggest there is more than meets the eye and would be very careful if you do open the box.

I say its too high on a non-climbable pole for anything but birds or bats. Look carefully for an entrance hole, no matter how small. If you can get up with a ladder of some kind, I would just open it and look.

I dont know what the pole is made of but you could put treesteps on it...the type used for hunting. They have screw in type or strap on type if you cant use a ladder.

It obviously has a purpose, and the one that is not applicable is TREASURE. Someone has a purpose with it, and would probably appreciate it being left untampered with.

I think the mature and responsible thing to do is leave it alone. There are no gold coins in a chest on a pole in the woods.

We also do not destroy old buildings in old ghost towns.

I agree. Just because it's a curiosity doesn't mean you have to destroy it.

Treasure? I doupt it...
