Hi All,

We were hunting in the woods in NJ at a new site this past weekend and came across this chest on a steel tube in the woods. My brother went to investigate it and started yelling thinking he’d been attacked by bees. After a speedy retreat we went in to reassess the situation and realized it wasn’t bees – but stinging plants. Some cousin of the nettle I imagine. Both of us and our hunting buddy were covered with some kind of biblical boils after a second attempt – we gave up.
Anyway – we were wondering if anybody has ever seen anything like this and knows whether it’s worth investigating. I asked the local police and they said they have no idea what it is.

We turned up this assortment of artifacts at another site in the same county. Supposedly some rev war activity there but we’re not sure on the age of the artifacts. Posted a few of em in “what is it?”

Looks like a small oxidized musketball,, a larger iron projectile, an iron buckle, a copper button and a know idea what it is but looks like a small bronze jar with engravings.

Thanks for looking and good luck digging.

I don't know what it is but it's close to water. That would help the odds of a camp.

Nice Finds.

On the Chest ?

Rain proofing for Video Camera Inside ? But it looks like it's Pointing Up.

Some type of Bird Nest (Feeder)

Maybe Bee Hive of some type even though you's wern't stung.

Could the top be open & Used for Rain Collection ?

But how would they Check it.
Did you check for Wires or Tubes at the Bottom ?

Interesting, not really sure about the box. That picture kinda looks like a scene out of LOST or something. lol Good luck with the site and figuring out what the box is.

It'd be interesting to get to that box but I believe I'd take a commercial weedeater, brush hook, and a case of wasp spray before I went back to check it out.

A treasure chest overhead...

on top of a drainpipe...

in the woods...

protected by stinging nettle-type insect things.

I'd say that's a good start to a story. HA!

Definitely very interesting... It may just be someones idea of a practical joke, knowing that the nettles would get who ever tried to check it out... If you do decide to check it out again, be careful,, looks like it's a pretty good ways up...

You might want to try asking the landowner. Either way, if you don't go get it, AND post whats inside, you're a big ol' sissy !!(sorry, the curiosity is killing me.)

Very interesting.
Could we get some more info about the box/site?
How high is the box?

My guess.
Storage box to keep camper's food out of the reach of animals.

That's a chest for sure. The metal corner protectors are your first clue. I'm confused why it's so high up on top of a pipe or pole?? I wouldn't have told anyone else about it. I suggest you go back, take some more pic's again... then attempt to figure out how to get it down. I suggest doing what my dad does in his tree business... throw a rope over a branch that's taller that the target, somehow figure out how to get the other end tied around the box itself, or the handle if it looks sturdy enough. Then get that thing down. What's weird is that it almost looks like it should be attached to the pole, since it's at a pretty good angle. Anyway, please update us all of this as soon as you can! Oh, maybe think about heavier clothes next time you go out, as well as a machete to get rid of the overgrowth. 100% Deet spray wouldn't hurt either to keep the bugs away.

Hmm, come to think of it... those marks that you had could've been left by chiggers. Just a thought...

Hi All,

Thanks for all the advice.

Deepdigger - I like the geocaching idea but I can't find it on the site.

and Edde - the police told me it might be drug related and not to mess with it cause if we get caught and its drugs we could get blamed. but they aren't interested in going checking it out themselves.

goldfish - i'm 99% sure its on old county property

Paul 1410 - its not as high as it looks - maybe 35 feet. Its about a 3/4 mile hike from the nearest paved road and only a few hundred feet from an old utility road.

I don't think hunting has been permitted here in the last 20 or so years so maybe its a left over hunting aparatus.

thanks again for all the input

in my opinion.

If it were Drug related or for Hiding a Cache it would Not be
Stiking in the Open like that.

and My guess too old to be a Geo Cache.

May be a feederor Homemade Trap
to lure whatever the Hunters of the time were looking for.

Was it a Home sight at one time ? look for a
Foundation.

Or Maybe just a
Feeder for the Jersey Devil ?
