Found this chain with a handle and rings through it not far from a flat button! Any ideas? Haven’t researched yet. It’s about 3 feet

My first thought was a calf pulling chain.

At one point (in much younger years) I had in the neighborhood of 30 doz. traps. Seen a chain or two...

after looking at horse trace chains it does look most like that! Do you think this is hand forged?

Well, then they used pretty much the same design for trap chains...could very well be.

I found lots of similar chains in our old, abandoned barn. Probably used to keep the cows in place. Ours had twisted links like yours, suggesting factory manufacture. Ours were from the the early to mid 1900s based upon what I know about active farming on the place.
