I have posted this on Todays' Finds also,
But now what is it?... I may have to take a trip to the museum to find out,but if anyone may know what these are for.. I would be happy to find out.. I'm a little reluctant to take them to the local archaeologist, If you know what I mean? Maybe someday!

Anyway, these are the pictures with a nickle in the picture for size.

The small ones are 3 CM and the large one is littler over 5 cm tall.

They all have two holes, one on the side and one in the bottom.
Of the 4, three look like they have burn makes on the bottom...see pictures. I'm thinking they had something to do with fire or making fire or used to light pipes in some way or maybe are pipes of some kind before metal pipes. They all have holes on top for a small cord.

Like I say, I found the large one 20 years ago while digging up a old coin. The other three were close together this weekend at a cave entrance. The big one was found near a castle site.
Any help by anyone that may idea or have seen something like this in other countries, please let me know...
Thanks Dave

In the first photo there appears to be a Chinese coin and in the other photos it appears to be a regular coin.
Why the change? If the Chinese coin was recovered near the clay pieces then I woould say these are Chinese Openium pipes.
AND if you found them anywhere near a railroad I would say YES they are Chinese.

After looking again I have change my thoughts
.I how believe they are incense burner covers. The loop at the top is to be able to remove the top without getting burnt.

I have thought about the scale thing also, but why put a hole in them, and why the burn marks on the bottom. I'm leaning on the idea of first type of pipes used or poor man pipes.. I will show picture later to explain why I think this now. Thanks everyone!

:) I think you meant they all have 3 holes in them.2 that interconnect and 1 for putting a string or something through for carrying(japanese had no pockets did they?).I think they are just as you've said "a poor mans pipe".Like downindixie said they more than likely had a bamboo stem.Is the larger of the 4 identical in construction? It's the only one I can't see a 3rd hole on.Nice find/s! :)

At what point was tobacco introduced into Japan?

Doc
1542 and by 1595 the habit was well established.http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/cu/cu23.html.All you ever wanted to know(or not) about tobacco history. :)

Maybe you should learn to read properly,it's in there.Instead of trying to antagonize me? And who cares about when japan opened her doors to the western world. What the hell does that have to do with this? I'm sure you will fill me in though, you can't help yourself.Quack,Quack

Yes we are. That's why I suggested that you read the page at the link i've provided. It tells when tobacco was introduced to Japan, which is what you asked about. So read it ALL and you'll know. ;) What positive input have you offered to this thread?Your turn...BTW-Sorry for the nonsense here Dave N Japan,i'm searching for an answer.

I say Fishing Weights or Scale Weights.
The Extra holes in the sides may have been from Whittling them down to the right Weight,

Does the Hole go all the way Through ?
If not then maby Pipes but then Why the Loops ?

maybe candle snuffer for ceremonies etc...

Duh, maybe the holes are on the top, not on the bottom as shown, then they could be crude pipes for smoking?
Use your spatial visualization to rotate them right side up. sheeesh, pipe bowls with a carrying ring minus the mouth tube.

T.T.
I am thinking more along your lines, These may be going way back before the metal ones came into being or these people were more poor than most!
Thanks for the drawing, I am going to save it! :)
