My first 1700's silver today !!!

I would have never thought today was the day to cross one off the list ! I got out for a morning hunt with my son Carson to hunt a few schools . The first two were a bust :BangHead: . I'm glad they were because we moved on to a school that we hunted last week that gave up the good . We hunted for over an hour and found some clad and I found a cool old Scout pocket knife . As I moved out into the back field I saw an old looking area that seemed not part of the school . It had some really large tree stumps with big roots . Lots of weeded and dead grass . I had a target that was 6-7 inches and very broken high tone . As I dug down in the first inch I found a copper penny . I then probed it again and I had a deeper target , +79 VDI . As I dug deeper I saw a very thin looking silver coin ! I took a picture and called Carson over . I was hoping I had a Barber or a worn out Seated dime but it was something way better :headbang: . When I dug out the side wall of the hole out popped the coin . Carson saw what it was and jumped up and said " IT'S A REALE !!!!! " I could not believe it !!! My first ever Reale and it is from 1778 !!! Now I don't want to give the location away but it is near some early Spanish activity in the the Bay Area . This is one I can mark off the list :hello2: . Then not more than 10 feet away I had a +80 at three inches , 1943S Mercury dime  . Carson was trying to find some silver but never did :BangHead: . He did find a 1954 S wheat cent :icon_thumright: . What a hunt , I still can't believe I found one !
HH
Glen

Congratulations Glen! sweet find, glad to see you and your son were able to find it together.
GL & HH!

Done shaking Glen? LOL. I know the feeling. Not from a Reale, but from a really awesome find. Nothing like it.

Great job. I don't even have hopes of finding one, so if I ever did it would be the surprise of my life. I wonder what your next big find will be?

Cool reale! I'm thinking that since it has a hole, it was a necklace that was lost by someone other than the Spanish at a later date. Like around the time of the other coins you found at the site. Still, very impressive.

Way to go Glen....pretty impressive for your neck of the woods dude!!

GOD Bless

Chris

Congratulations on your 1778 Reale and the Merc Glen! :occasion14:
I guess when you saw a 79 on the VDI you got kinda excited, bet you never dreamed it would be Spanish Silver!

Great hunt my friend!
Dave

PS. Sorry to hear that Carson got skunked, maybe you can let him hold your Reale to make him feel better! :laughing7:

That silver will make up for not finding any rings. Awesome job

Wow! That's super cool! Really lends credit to the saying "you never know what it is, till ya pull it out"! Congratulations!!! I found a "holed" coin this year, but it was not Spanish silver, a '38 wheatie of all things, go figure! Again, congrats!!!!! HH Michael

Congrats on a really spectacular find. GL&HH!

Thanks everyone ! It was one great surprise to see it in the dirt ! The area I was hunting in has a lot of early Spanish California history but I never thought I would find a Reale
Glen

Hi Glen see what happens when I take a night or two off from posting ! Big congrats on crossing the Old Spanish Silver off the list !!

That's a great recovery!

Now that's a find to remember for sure, been digging forever and it's one that's still on the bucket list. That's a find that screams this is what makes this hobby so great, when you least expect it out pops a winner.

Congrats on the Reale!

Great hunt & congrats on the Spanish silver.

sweet!!!! spanish silver. hope to find one for myself here in florida. but the sight i'm working hasn't produced anything significant sight was bulldozed back in the 60's and a dike was formed to keep ocean at bay during storms. hopeing that works in my favor
