Today was beautiful out, so I hit the 1830's CW property. Today was my 1st hunt of 08', and my 1st venture out into the woods now that deer season is over. I hit the woods with the Mighty Tesoro and hunted in All Metal mode. This machine LOVES relics! Most of my finds were found within about 20 yards from the edge of the woods, so I'm thinking the troops followed along the edge.
As you can see, I will be very busy cleaning up rusty relics with electrolysis this week.
I think I may have found a bayonet in two pieces. I found the sharp dagger piece within a foot of the curved piece. Could it be a bayonet? Also an odd piece that I am hoping may be a piece of a rifle?
Numerous pocket knives, buckles, buttons, and many other rusty pieces that I have no clue what they are.
The big highlight of my day though was digging up what MAY be an old COPPA!!! It would be my first Large Cent ever if it is. It needs cleaning bad as you can see.
I contacted Don our resident coin guru, and he thinks it MAY be an early year Large Cent, possibly a Draped Bust. At this point I am going to gently clean it with water and Q-tips as instructed and hope for the best. I told Don I would be happy with ANY Large Cent as I have never found one yet.
O.K., so here are my finds for today:

*My 1st ever Large Cent (hopefully) - It measures 28-29mm - Please be a draped bust. Please! ;D

*Many asst'd relics: Possible bayonet ? , five pocket knives, spikes , plus much more.

*Two buckles.
Does anyone know if the one with all the slats in it would be CW era? Any name for this type of buckle?

*Small flower like piece with a star in the center.
CW piece?

*Old buttons.

*Asst's bullets

*"V" shaped decoration piece.

Thanks for looking Folks & have a great week,
MM
Doug

Re: My 1st hunt in the woods - CW Relics & Large COPPA!!! (I think)

The right hand buckle is a common horse harness/ horse tack related & is probably not more than 100 years old. I find about 2 everytime I go out.

The other buckle I haven't seen before but could be late 19th C.

Glad to hear 'iffy signals paid off. I honestly like them better than clear sharp ones :)

Honestly the Cortes is the dogs Bs & you could't pay me to use another (it is easy to learn). I swear do without some luxuries for awhile you will thank me later. You will be able to start every good site from scratch. ;)

Modern Miner very nice finds. So do you think you would perfer hunting in the woods or in open fields now? I have never hunted in the woods before but I sure will try it now.

Great Finds! Congratulations, you have an encampment site! My suggestion to you and anyone that is relic hunting is to dig every signal. What I have found in the Union encampment I am currently working is that there are tons of iron items in the ground and they hide/mask the better items so if you dig everything and remove them from the area you will start finding more and better items. The site my two TH'ing buddies and I have worked for the past three years is now turning more coins. Saturday a 1858 flying Eagle Cent, Sunday a 1857 flying Eagle Cent, two weeks ago a 1857 flying eagle, December 27th a 1854 Silver three cent. So many bullets and nicer buttons have been found.

Keep searching the site and remove all the trash as you will start finding more good items.
Best of luck.

PS: Remember; Don't leave it in the ground!

Holy cow DD, that's a lot of nice finds there. Congrats.
This was my first attempt at the woods. I'll be searching in All Metal mode and digging the 'iffies" too.
Do you have any closeups of any pocket knives or bayonet pieces you may have found?
Thanks,
MM

Thanks Crusader. I'll be saving up for one. I can't give up my weekly 6/pack though. ;)

Sarge,
I still like the open fields, because there is nothing in my way, and the soil is a very easy dig. Not to mention no roots to dig through. I have found some VERY deep targets in this soft farm soil.
The thing I do like about the woods is finding a target right up next to a tree or branch that someone else may have missed. I am very thorough working around these obstacles. The small flower / star piece above was right up by a small tree. I also remember the beautiful 23' Merc dime I found at my other farm spot right next to a small sapling.
It pays to not be in a hurry.

Thanks Kirk. I thought of you when I dug it up. I'm hoping to make Junior member of BDD this year. ;)
Not only will I keep the passion high, I'll need to keep my pants pulled up high too. :o
I had so many relics in my pouch this hunt, it was pulling my drawers down. ;D

Re: My 1st hunt in the woods - CW Relics & Large COPPA!!! (I think)

This LC is killing me! I'm still trying to get it clean enough to see a date. I swear I see a "97" in the date, but how could that be?
The ladies face is facing LEFT when looking at the coin. I can make out a few letters in her headband ("BE" from LIBERTY).
I can read the word "ONE" on the back, and the letter "N" under the word "ONE".
There can't be an LC with a "97" in the date with the lady facing left and wearing the "LIBERTY" headband, right?
I'm sure I see the "7", and I'm pretty sure the other number is a "9".
Help!!!!
I'll keep cleaning & post pictures tomorrow night. Sorry to spend so much time on this LC, but it's my first, and I'm dying to know what date it is. ;D
Any guesses?
Thanks,
MM

Re: My 1st hunt in the woods - CW Relics & Large COPPA!!! (I think)

It could be a 27. The 2s on large cents were very curly. If you're very certain the last digit is a 7, it's a 1817, 27, or 37. See if you can count the stars on the front. If you can count 15 stars, then it's an 1817

Thanks SMS88.

She's facing left for sure. I can see her nose clearly on that side.

Re: My 1st hunt in the woods - CW Relics & Large COPPA!!! (I think)

Congrats on that Large Coppa and the other neat finds Doug.
You are making some great finds with that UMax.
Hope you can get a date on the Coppa.
Best regards, Merf

Re: My 1st hunt in the woods - **NEW PICTURES ADDED**

O.K. Folks, the good news is the coin IS a LC. The bad news is it's a corroded piece of cr-p. :'(
Unfortunately the only number in the date that I was 100% sure on was a "7". This one is just too far gone to do anything with. Where most peoples LC's are readable and the "LC" stands for Large Cent, my LC stands for "Lost Cause". ;D Oh well, I'll look for a better one this year.

***Calling all CW relic nuts***

Attached are a few pictures of some of the rusted items I found cleaned up a bit.
Any idea what they are?
The one long curved piece looks like it may have had a pivot point on the large end? There looks to be maybe a square headed pin there too. What is this little mystery?

The other long piece and 90 degree elbow piece I found next to each other. The long piece I swear looks like some sort of blade. It is wedge shaped and has (had) a sharp edge. It seems to be a better grade metal, and makes a totally different sound than normal rusty junk when I drop it on a hard surface
Any idea?

I have a lot more rusty relics to clean up. More pictures to follow as I get them done.
Thanks,
MM

Doug, my man, it is a Coronet cent! Your coin is probably 1817 or 1827! It isn't a piece of crap...it is identifiable! :)
