Today was beautiful out, so I hit the 1830's CW property. Today was my 1st hunt of 08', and my 1st venture out into the woods now that deer season is over. I hit the woods with the Mighty Tesoro and hunted in All Metal mode. This machine LOVES relics! Most of my finds were found within about 20 yards from the edge of the woods, so I'm thinking the troops followed along the edge.
As you can see, I will be very busy cleaning up rusty relics with electrolysis this week.
I think I may have found a bayonet in two pieces. I found the sharp dagger piece within a foot of the curved piece. Could it be a bayonet? Also an odd piece that I am hoping may be a piece of a rifle?
Numerous pocket knives, buckles, buttons, and many other rusty pieces that I have no clue what they are.
The big highlight of my day though was digging up what MAY be an old COPPA!!! It would be my first Large Cent ever if it is. It needs cleaning bad as you can see.
I contacted Don our resident coin guru, and he thinks it MAY be an early year Large Cent, possibly a Draped Bust. At this point I am going to gently clean it with water and Q-tips as instructed and hope for the best. I told Don I would be happy with ANY Large Cent as I have never found one yet.
O.K., so here are my finds for today:

*My 1st ever Large Cent (hopefully) - It measures 28-29mm - Please be a draped bust. Please! ;D

*Many asst'd relics: Possible bayonet ? , five pocket knives, spikes , plus much more.

*Two buckles.
Does anyone know if the one with all the slats in it would be CW era? Any name for this type of buckle?

*Small flower like piece with a star in the center.
CW piece?

*Old buttons.

*Asst's bullets

*"V" shaped decoration piece.

Thanks for looking Folks & have a great week,
MM
Doug

And you said you never find any large cents ;D Great job for sure on that old coin.. HH relicdude ..

RD,
I guess I can stop saying that now. My new line is "I never find any 1800's silver." ;D (yet) ;)

Congrats on the BIG copper, buddy! Certainly a wreath on the back of that one. Way to go! If that iron piece is triangular, it could be a piece of a bayonet (the piece on the left in the photo), but I'm not convinced that the piece on the right goes with it--or if the two did go together then it might not be a bayonet after all.
Great stuff there--glad you got out to enjoy this AWESOME weather, my friend.

-Buckleboy

BB,
It is a triangular shape, and it sounds like a decent type metal too. I'll try to take a picture soon. I ran it through electrolysis last night, then run a wire brush over it. It's a dagger or weapon of some sort. The spot I am hunting at was one of the biggest Confederate surrenders of the CW I read. Maybe that's why I found five pocket knives? ;D
I can't wait to get back out there.

Cool stuff my friend.

Thanks Bulgarian. Not as good as your finds though. ;) I was telling some of my coworkers today about your fantastic jewelry finds. They were drooling like I was. ;D

I agree with Buckleboy. I can see the wreath on the back of the coin. Nice find Doug! Congrats. I hope that piece turns out to be a bayonet. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Rob

Thanks Rob. I'm hoping it is a piece of a bayonet too. I'll post a few pictures soon.

Still looks like the site will give plenty more yet. Keep clearing it ;D

Thanks Crusader.
I thought of you when I dug up that tiny flower piece with a heart on it. Ever since you mentioned that you dig all iffy signals, it has paid off for me too. The large cent I found was an iffy signal. I dug about 8", but it was still in the hole. It was found at about 12" deep!. The buckle up top with the slits in it was found deeper than that. I know some folks may be skeptical of that depth, but believe me, it IS TRUE. The Tesoro really is an amazing machine.
I may upgrade this year to the model you use if I can round up the dough.
Thanks again for your tips,
MM

Here's some info on the spot I am MDing at if anyone cares to read about this battle:

http://www.mindspring.com/~nixnox/history2.html

The house & woods I am detecting at is in the middle of this battle area.
Even though this area has been detecting over the years, someone sure missed a lot of good finds. ;D
That's where I come in. ;)

Congrats on your first LC Doug. You've worked hard and you deserve it!

Re: My 1st hunt in the woods - CW Relics & Large COPPA!!! (I think)

Great Finds! Congratulations, you have an encampment site! My suggestion to you and anyone that is relic hunting is to dig every signal. What I have found in the Union encampment I am currently working is that there are tons of iron items in the ground and they hide/mask the better items so if you dig everything and remove them from the area you will start finding more and better items. The site my two TH'ing buddies and I have worked for the past three years is now turning more coins. Saturday a 1858 flying Eagle Cent, Sunday a 1857 flying Eagle Cent, two weeks ago a 1857 flying eagle, December 27th a 1854 Silver three cent. So many bullets and nicer buttons have been found.

Keep searching the site and remove all the trash as you will start finding more good items.
Best of luck.

PS: Remember; Don't leave it in the ground!

Thanks Dan.
I need to find a nicer one now. This one is a POS, and I'm getting frustrated with it. :'( :'(
I tried cleaning it with just water and a Q-tip. That didn't help too much.
Then I read Don's hydrogen peroxide method. That helped me at least see her face, some stars, and the wreath, but only when it was wet.
I'm trying a drastic cleaning method right now that would make the faint at heart cringe. I was just hoping to see a date. If not, no big deal. I'm glad I found an LC finally, but now it's a quest to find a readable date LC. ;D
I'm sure you guys are enjoying this great weather up North. ;)

Re: My 1st hunt in the woods - CW Relics & Large COPPA!!! (I think)

Post a pic of it cleaned. My eyes might be tricking me, but I think it's a type 1 Coronet LC (1816-1828) I think I can see a third digit as a 1 and the fourth possibly a 7 or a 9, making it 1817 or 1819. It's still pretty dirty. Leaving it in olive oil could help. I tried to copy your picture and circle the areas in which I saw detail. Hope you can see the circles
