Misc data and adventures of a Tayopa treasure hunter

a different kind of example, Tuscany in the '50s was just beautiful and as an American one bounced immediately to the top of the social class, little traffic, deferential people, cheap - easy to love. I rode my bicycle around the Duomo on Sunday morning, not a person or car, scooter, etc. in sight.
Tuscany and Firenze are worth visiting today only if you like wall to wall tourists.

Who has benefited from tourism?

Happy birthday Don Jose!
I'm glad you are active again. This year i will not post a Greek dancer for you, leaving that to your imagination.
Some times imagination makes better things than reality.

Buenas Dias to you!

Your ego should endure. After all when another log is put on the fire , it's your fire here still.

98...
You must be kin to the Mesquite? Perhaps smoke from them and other long living species in your tortillas has contributed. :laughing7:
I cheated/splurged as usual and bought some from the store last night. That might explain some things. ....

Happy Birthday Don Jose! May God bless your coming years abundantly and keep you safe,,,

Billa,,,it appears you had the opportunity to visit such iconic places in the golden era of travel...now it is a different story...i was in Florence and Pisa area of Tuscany in 2014 and at that time though crowded, it was still possible to visit the great museums and venues with less hassle maybe an hour of que,,,but in recent years before covid i read that in many such venues in Europe you need to book weeks ahead to visit them because of the sheer number of crowds...

I am sure in the 50s and 60s you also could enjoy authentic cuisine in any of the restaurants...now it is a tourist trap and to taste authentic cuisines of an area either you have to enter a very expensive high end restaurant or you really have to go into the villages and suburbs like a treasure hunting...the average restaurants in the cities have mostly become tourist traps..

As to who are benefiting?...I guess those restaurant and hotel and hostel owners as well as tourist guide and travel agencies are making money big time...but they constitute a very few percentage of the population who are finding living expenses unbearable because of the over tourism...

TT, time passes, you cause me to consider things not thought of in ages
I lived in Florence and other parts of Europe, came back to the US and joined the USN who sent me back to Naples, saw a bit and now dislike visiting due to the changes. But note that I have exactly the same experience revisiting my birthplace N. Calif.

We visited museums every Sunday as they were free w/few people.
Really great well-known restaurants, drive up and be welcomed.

Tourism is a double edged blade, short term benefits for long-term societal destruction.
(I came to CR as a treasure hunter, lol.)

edit: sorry RoT for trashing the thread, I'll stop

Billa You certainly moved around a bit in younger days...I saw this link lately...they are waiting for covid to subside...it certainly would be interesting in the first couple years before it becomes mundane and copycatted and before the entrepreneurs begin to cut some features ...18 countries in 70 days between Delhi and London in luxury bus....

reminds me of the old saw: It's Thursday so it must be Rome.

more seriously, I could probably get you connected to dig paleolithics in Kamkatcha?
