Maps

Hal,

I will attempt to get an answer to the question.

Take care,

Joe

Cactusjumper,

If I were asked to guess what the mine looked like, the Haywood mine, in my mind it would look something like this only not to scale.

...and the view, from just above the mine would look like this,

which, if you can forgive the use of Google Earth, looks not unlike this.

Hal - If there's anything you are willing to share about your search for authenticating Silas Haywood, I can guarantee there are more than a few people who would enjoy seeing what you come up with. I was interested a few years ago and started digging but didn't get far before I kept hitting brick walls - eventually I got sidetracked and never went down that road again, but it would certainly be nice to know whether the person actually existed and can be tied with at least a reasonable belief to the story about him in Conatser's book.

Just a place to start and I am not saying this is the same person. But, I am not saying that it isn't. I just need another eight hours in the day.

There is a small, small, chance that Silas Haywood is actually Hoska Yilhalwood Haywood. A Navaho and son of Hoska Haywood. (Indian Census Roll Jan 1st, 1937 Navaho/Southern). He was 15 in 1937 or born in 1922/23. If "Silas Haywood" was 37 in 1960 (the year that he died) than he was born in 22/23.

PLEASE. This is only one possibility. NOT 100%.

Hal - everyone has to start somewhere so I see nothing wrong with your possibility and at least this way there's a name to start doing some tracing of! I had hoped at some point to be able to find a Haywood in Milwaukee during the time frame he was supposed to be there but that's where I kept coming up against brick walls. Since I'm in WI one or two times a year I always figured that would be a good place I could look in specific records.

Thanks for the information - maybe if more people get involved in digging into the history with links like these we can finally figure some of this out! If it turns out to be the wrong person so be it - we just move on to the next one!

You only need 8 more hours in a day?? :)

Nice illusion Hal, if it weren't for that red rock.:laughing7:

Not the smartest place to snap a shot but it's no illusion. Honest, that's a fairly steep drop into LaBarge.

Here is another from better times, high above Matmata, Tunisa where Star War IV was filmed. Taken shortly before my detainment and escort off the mountain by Tunisian soldiers... I didn't realize that it was restricted. ; ) Anything for the shot however, that smug look turned humble awfully quick.

That shot of weavers needle is stunning. The terrain is getting really green

I sometimes wonder if the locals appreciate just how uniquely beautiful the Superstitions are. Add in the history and mystery. Well, I have had the fortune to travel some but nothing comes close.

~ Thank you for the image and advice. Here is one that I took from almost the same location.
And one of me on the edge of an edge.

If you stumble across a camp up there that smells irresistibly delicious, that me.
How well can you eat in the wilderness? That's one of my challenges.
Turns out better than you would think.
