Lets try to put ourselfs in the outlaws footsteps back in the day!!??

sportinwood;
I would like to respond to your reply about my post on weights. I didn't use the 12 oz. troy pound because most people are more familiar with the 16 oz. avoirdupois pound than they are with troy; not because I don't know about troy.

Dividing 5000 ozs. by 12 does not increase the weight from 312.50 lbs. to 416.66 lbs., it only increases the number of times the divisor will go into the dividend. 5000 ozs. divided by 16 = 312.50 lbs., divided by 12 = 416.66 lbs. Divide by 10 and you'll get 500 lbs. It is still 5000 ozs. in weight, and is a specific weight whether it is weighed in grains, pennyweight, or grams.

There is no extra weight or weight increase.

You're right, we need to be as accurate as possible.

Alright. MOST Bandits stole more than they could carry and more than they could flash around and spend without drawing attention to themselves in another town that they may run to after a robbery. They would quickly hide the loot, taking a couple hunderd bucks worth for each man, (wages were about $20 a month for cow hands). If they hide half and spent half, they probably got killed in a saloon gun fight, while drunk, so 1/2 is still out there somewhere. if they only kept a little of it with them, they probably pulled off another robbery before going back to get more from the previous robberies hiding place. So maybe they got caught or killed in this next robbery. If not, then just repeat all the above... untill hes killed or jailed.

Also, I had to look this up again, in a conversion chart. 12 Troy ozs. = .82 Lbs. and
100 troy ozs. = 6.8 Lbs do a search for "troy-ounce-to-pound-table " Generaly when you speak about troy ozs. your not measuring Pounds Small gold ingots are 1 oz troy., 5 oz. troy, .... I guess 5000 troy ozs would be 340 Lbs. A 20 dollar gold piece is almost one troy oz, so 500 (five hundred) troy oz. of 20 dollar gold pieces is near $10,000. face value and is about 34 lbs. ???? durn is that right.....

Ride hard a ways.........find Fence row near trail......bury under fence line.....maybe near corner......mark a rock......or tree or both....

continue on down the road.....coast gets clear.......come back later and dig up and move to more secure area.....Most had
banks in the ground that they repeatly visited...makin deposits!

What sign would you draw on a rock or tree indicating.....buried under fence row?

I suppose a dollar sign would not be a good idea. :wink:

With the lack of Honesty back then don't you suppose that the people searching for the hidden loot after the robbery might have made off with some of it if they found it? You hear many times through out history about Sheriffs turning outlaw why wouldn't the average man want to keep the loot if he found it. Wells Fargo was insured so they got paid . The Government had Indians to fight and wars to be fought so they didn't put a lot of time into recovery. We had a single neighbor(an old man) not to far away that when he died they found 1.2 million in his bed materess. This just happen around 2005 !

Yes, mikeothmer, that is a definite possibility. But what about the other possibility, that the loot was never recovered and is waiting for some treasure hunter to find it? Think about the old man you mentioned. What if everyone took the attitude that the old fellow had nothing, so it would do no good to look for anything? Or maybe some family members got it first. But those things didn't happen, did they? The loot was there. There was the possibility too that the old man could have hid it in a place where it wouldn't be found easily, although that wasn't the case here. If no one had believed in possibilities, that loot might still be there today. It happens. How do we know it happens? For one, loot has been found from years ago. And even now we have many, even on this treasure hunting site, that refuse to believe in possibilities. Good thing for me, I guess.
