Knockout Game Concerns

Kids up here ain't stupid enough to pull something like that on an adult,
but I can see how teens may perpetrate it among themselves. Even if
they tried it in public, someone present will know the attacker, or their
family. The former "attacker" would then be waking up the next morning
chained to a tree a few miles back in the woods, and feeling lucky to still
have all his teeth.

It's easy to sneak up on us deaf people, but God help the one who takes
a cheap shot at me and doesn't get it "right", 'cause there's a whole can
of whoop-ass coming their way.

Living in a town of 800 has it's benefits! Another good reason to avoid cities.

Staying aware of your soundings isnt being paranoid. The whole point of staying aware is knowing everything thats going on around you.

By dang when I am away from home my eyes scan 360,

I want to know what is going on around me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even at home I do.

You ain't sneakin up on me!

If I understand what's going on, the knockout game isn't a one on one deal, it's usually a group of young men, the majority of the time nonwhite, and one of them pulls a creep. Be aware, if they are walking toward you, walk away. If you can't do anything else, and if one or more are gaining on you, or start running at you, I would hope you have a weapon of some sort. Be aware of your back. If you have a dog that knows "sic 'em," by all means bring it along. I pack all the time anymore. Depending on where I'm going to be depends on the gun I have on me. At my age, large pistols are getting to be to much to handle, so I'm usually packing a short barreled .38 of a .22 magnum, which both are underpowered and not the best defense choice at all. But then I'm not planning on getting into a gun fight either. More than anything else, if you are packing you have to be willing to use it. If you aren't willing to shoot, don't pack. No matter what, you got a gun, be prepared to undergo what George Zimmerman did, especially in this day and age. To me the best way to handle the knockout game would be to just avoid the area where they are likely to be.

Doesn't matter what you pack

Shoot for the head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NH Bandit...Reread my post. The odds of falling victim to this game is miniscule. Worrying about it is a waste of energy and not good for you. Don't worry. Be happy.[/QUOTE

There is a world of difference between worry and concern.

I have more Concerns that that deep silver signal may be another shallow Nail
giving a signal off it's edge.

The Knockout Game is a horrible new fad being carried out by punks, thugs, and bullies. I don't think carrying a weapon on you is going to do much good if the cowards are sneaking up or blind siding you with a sucker punch. No time to defend yourself. I think I would want to kill a person that did that to one of my family members.
What the h-ll is this world coming to?
-MM-

Amen!

Wow! Sorry guys, I just don't worry about it. Doesn't mean I'm a fool. Always been a city kid and consider myself street smart.

Best of luck if you ever move to the sticks, that 'street smart' will NOT help you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you don't worry about it because you're street smart & prepared. "Prepared" could mean having the means to defend yourself or simply knowing the score where you live and how to react to any particular situation. Cool. That was my whole point as well. Where I live there are roving gangs of cows breaking through the fence and trying to eat my lawn...

Are you kiding! If I move to the sticks the first thing I will do is get a gun. It ain't safe in them hills.

LOL its a lot safer in the sticks than in the big cities. It's the cities that concern me the most.....

My firearms are like my credit cards, I never leave home with out them...

We will NOT go quietly into the night!

LOL I guess you could call where I live "The Sticks" compared to most places.
"Sticks, Boondocks, the Hills, Jabip"

I hope this does not get me crushed here but I know what Escape is saying. I would never let a fear or concern stop me from enjoying life. I love detecting and as I got older my life has changed so my weekends are filled with my kids obligations: sports, scouts, music, etc. The only time I have to myself to hunt is during my lunch and I happen to work in one of the worst cities in NJ and country. Other then one non-violent incedent that actually had me laughing out load in the persons face I've had nothing but positive interactions with the local people of this awesome city. I think they think I'm a little crazy which is fine by me.

The only reason this even became a concern was that the people around the water cooler were talking about it and mention how they don't even want to go outside. That got me think because I try to get out there every chance I get. I've never backed down from anything in my life but usually use humor to get out of tight situations but with these attacks there is little or no warning. No chance to talk your way out.

As stated above I always keep aware of my surroundings. From being in a city for so many years I always keep my head up and make sure everyone I walk past know I'm aware of them with out staring them down. After posting this I thought about my detecting style and realize that I always keep my right hand resting on the handle of my Lesche digger. I guess that is my security blanket. When detecting urban parks there are sidewalks everywhere so when I'm detecting and someone is walking towards me and they are not on a sidewalk I usually eyeball them a little closer so I can determine their intent. Usually they are heading for a bus stop or something else behind me and I'm constantly getting comments or questions as they walk by.

I do feel that a majority of people are good at heart but I try to stay aware of the minority that is not.

Be safe

I know a hunter who was mugged at Daytona Beach, he got in a couple licks with his scoop, but he still ended up in hospital with a concussion. Now he always hunts armed.....

I carry a firearm not in any hopes I get to use it, but rather just in case I ever do need it. A firearm is just insurance I carry just like my car, home, health and life insurance, I carry them all just on the outside chance I might need them one day..

We will NOT go quietly into the night!

That one has a better chance of being struck by lightning while being attacked by a shark isn't going to convince anyone not to worry about it.

There is no one "worried" about it, that doesn't diminish the resentment about it happening or the travesty of the way many on the left view it..
