Knockout Game Concerns

No biggie ModernMiner,I dont like it either.A very good practice is to go over in your head, rehearse if you will any given situation, your actions if something does happens.Your reflexes will be quicker, you wont have to think about what youre going to do.Like playing a guitar, your finger automatically move to the next fret.If I'm walking down the street and pass somebody,i watch them out of the corner of my eye.I learned,I was jumped once leaving a bar I worked in.After that my .357 came with me.

I agree we spend too much time on our cell phones, but I don't think everyone needs to go around being paranoid waiting to get punched either. Do you think the lady that got cold cocked from behind in the video stood a chance? How about the 78 year old lady? Sure we can watch people heading towards us, but while you are busy doing that you get hit from behind. Let's face it, we are not mountain men of yore, nor do we have eyes in the back of our heads.
How many of us go out detecting with headphones on and are zoned in at the ground as you swing. You would NOT see it coming!
Everyone has an opinion on what they would do to protect or defend themselves or how tough they would be, but we are talking about a split second. That's reality. Maybe we could all go around wearing football helmets? :BangHead:
-MM-

I have hunted Fla beaches at night by myself and even with headphones on I stay aware of my surroundings.

I also always hunt armed with firearm at night since I don't hunt deeper than knee deep at night.

During the day if I'm hunting in the water and not carrying a pistol I have a large filet knife I carry that is 11 inches long of surgical steel..

Better safe than sorry....

We will NOT go quietly into the night!

If I understand what's going on, the knockout game isn't a one on one deal, it's usually a group of young men, the majority of the time nonwhite, and one of them pulls a creep. Be aware, if they are walking toward you, walk away. If you can't do anything else, and if one or more are gaining on you, or start running at you, I would hope you have a weapon of some sort. Be aware of your back. If you have a dog that knows "sic 'em," by all means bring it along. I pack all the time anymore. Depending on where I'm going to be depends on the gun I have on me. At my age, large pistols are getting to be to much to handle, so I'm usually packing a short barreled .38 of a .22 magnum, which both are underpowered and not the best defense choice at all. But then I'm not planning on getting into a gun fight either. More than anything else, if you are packing you have to be willing to use it. If you aren't willing to shoot, don't pack. No matter what, you got a gun, be prepared to undergo what George Zimmerman did, especially in this day and age. To me the best way to handle the knockout game would be to just avoid the area where they are likely to be.

Austin, isn't living in Texas grand? Love it!

Yeah, but maybe not in July and August. Don't you love how everyone complains about things that we never think about. Gun control, carrying weapons with you in the truck or on your person, sucking down some beers while driving through West Texas, Padre Island or the west side of San Antonio with no thought ever of a cop, going out to eat a Whataburger or my night favorite here(Chacho's mexican food) at 3 in the morning with no worry about crime, only indigestion, still semi affordable gasoline and rent. Don't know where you are, but even at 65 I'm having a ball...

My idea, used often, is to live on mexican food, especially refried beans and charro beans. Forms a sort of invisible clocking device that noone wants to penetrate. Can be a bit noisy too, so best if used outside. Also, creating the effect is realy cheap to purchase in restaurant or grocery.

I hunt in open areas and look around often. I often mutter to my self or the detector especially if it's can slaw I'm finding! I'm usually left alone, but if they decide to ruin the few times I get out to detect I am willing to share in spades, and it won't be pretty! Probe is dull and rounded but the digger is very pointy! Just because I have on head phones doesn't mean I can't hear what's going on around me. The quiet ones are best left alone :)

Yes it is. It doesn't take much to justify the use of deadly force around here. That being said self defense isn't just a class one takes, it's a lifestyle. Note to knock out game opponent: What ever you hit me with had better be very hard, because this certainly isn't my first time playing these types of reindeer games. Remember these attacks are usually videoed so there is a potential second attacker.

I'm sure the number of people who have been a victim of this game is miniscule. News media loves hyping and spreading thing to fear.

CHOOT'M...CHOOT'M...CHOOT'M!!!!

Yeah, I hear ya. Big deal if people are being murdered in the coarse of this "hyped" game by the media. :BangHead:

NH Bandit...Reread my post. The odds of falling victim to this game is miniscule. Worrying about it is a waste of energy and not good for you. Don't worry. Be happy.

So just for a minute let's stop playing games and admit that the vast majority of the attackers are young Black thugs. I know it's hard being honest but just for the sake of discussion we'll take the blinders off this one time... Are you telling me I should feel safe walking through a mostly thug infested Black neighborhood by myself at night unarmed because the odds are that nothing will happen ? Don't count on it. As others have said, the best defense (after simply not putting yourself in that position in the first place) is to be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you're walking and you see a group of thugs coming your way assume something bad is about to happen and don't take your eyes off of them. Keep your back to a wall and your eyes wide open. If one or more start heading towards you that might be a good time to have your hand on some means of self defense. Note to the Nancy boys... I didn't say to pull a gun.. I said to be prepared for the worst. NEVER present them with a blind side because these vermin prey on the weak and if they think it could go badly for them they are likely to leave you alone.

So just because only a handful have died it's not an issue?

There have been dozens of attacks and there are a handful of deaths. May of the attacks are on the elderly and women....

I don't fear it happening to me, I stay aware of my surroundings and I carry firearm 95% of the time I leave home and I will use deadly force if needed.

Fear is not the issue....

Wonder why the majority of the attacks take place in states where the citizens have surrendered their rights to protect theirselves. ..

We will NOT go quietly into the night!

Most women don't think they will be raped either. But it happens. Anyone thinking this way can put the rose colored glasses back on and bury their head back in the sand and wait to be a victim.

Wow! Sorry guys, I just don't worry about it. Doesn't mean I'm a fool. Always been a city kid and consider myself street smart.

I don't worry, and I am happy and I do those things my old body will let me do. That said, part of my happiness is a small .22 magnum tucked into a pocket, at home, in town or on the road. When on the road I take along a second pistol, which is always in my truck, and in the woods I pack that one, it's a .45 ACP with a cute little laser dot that shows where the bullet is going. It's been a long time since I've had to go anyplace where there are racial gangs to worry about. I live out in the country near a small town, and we aren't crime free by any means, but we don't have problems with gangs of thugs roaming the streets either. I still pack all the time. It's called self defense, and the saying "when seconds count, the cops are minutes away" is true. So if need be I'll respond at something like 1400 feet per second, followed by at least one more. It's called "double tap." Make sense to me, and I'm happy, and in my dottage I'll not take a beating from anyone.
