Juno Beach beach nourishment

forgot to add no driving on the beach * as a kid we always drove on the beach to and from our spot where choose to use -- now gotta "park and pay" and then walk to where you plan to sit and picnic dragging all your stuff with you.

The one thing that I love about living in St. Johns county. Driving on the beach. Although, they are closing down Matanzas Inlet as of Jan 1, 2010.

I remember them driving on the beach in cocoa beach. And people got their cars stuck at low tide and the ocean would come in and drown their cars, lol.

How about the geniuses that put the 50 gallon drum barrels on the beach for trash collection but paid no mind to the weather, hurricanes, which would dump those cans and all of their contents all over the beaches? What-a-mess !

Back to topic. Maybe one of us should go down there and watch for things? I will if someone accomidate my stay down there.

LOL..you could always tell when the tide was coming in at the old Ponce inlet..the wreckers would arrive like vultures. Same happened by the boardwalk (Daytona) at night.

Yea, that is tough along the dunes too, especially since the re-nourishment project. I've been wanting some contraption for hauling everything. After all, treasure hunters need a lot of equipment. I usually don't eat while THing as I am so focused on what I am doing, but I think about "what if I find something heavy" ? How do I get my gold back to the car ? I figured a sled like apparatus might work. Or maybe some kind tourists that have nothing better to do ?
Then again, I don't like to leave equipment laying around for someone to swipe either, as I cover a good distance when I go out usually. I wish I could move my car by remote control. Would be a lot easier.

I love driving on Daytona beach while hunting. Alot of times I'll do a quarter mile at a time and just pick up where I left off the day before. It's a great way to find the more productive spots.

You might consider a golf cart (the kind you pull along). You can get 'em really cheap, a few bucks at a garage sale, and they are really light and have large enough wheels to go over lots of stuff. I'd imagine they would pull OK on the hard sand by the water's edge.

Only problem is, since the beach re-nourishment project, there isn't that much "hard sand" left anymore. Hard to get to and from that very narrow strip they left us.

Get yourself one of those round saucers that you ride in on snow hills,hook a rope to it and drag all your equipment down the beach.wheels of any kind other than large balloon wheels dont work very well in any kind of sand.

LOL. I actually like all kinds of hauling contraptions. ACE Hardware is one of my favorite stores.
They have a nice one in Lakeland, FL on South Florida Avenue, in Southgate Shopping Center, that sells a lot of different types of wagons etc. They had a giant toy remote control bulldozer that I eyed for a long time, which I thought would be cool for doing all my digging at the beach

Just didn't look powerful enough though. Too bad backhoes are not allowed.

Like other TH"s I try to make or modify tools if I can't find what I am looking for.

Were 30 miles apart. Used to cut through your area heading towards Yeehaw Junction and the Treasure Coast on my beach hunts.
Up in Arkysaw for the moment. Yea, I try to hit any store that has equipment or tools, as you never know what you might find. I am always trying to think constructively if something I see can be modified for "the hunt". Ace was really good, as they still have some of the old timers that were there when I was a kid, and they are really helpful. They will cut screen mesh to your desired size etc. Nominal cost and wonderful service.

Now another place I like to pick up stuff is Big Lots. They get some very lightweight tools in from time to time, which are a lot easier to manage, and the price is really decent. I especially like "extension handles" as they are easier and smaller to pack and haul around.

I could use a metal detector rod that breaks down into at least 4 parts. Would like something that can fit into a fairly good size backpack. I also like the hipmounts....just can't afford the SurfPro at the moment.

As far as dredging is concerned, I did modify a tool as a small hand dredging device. Worked great too ! However, beachgoers thought I was some strange person taking this particular thing to the beach ! Too many "status" tourists on the T-Coast.

I made my metal detector shaft out of carbon fiber tubes,its now indestructable and can be broken down to make a short handle for the coil for underwater use.I have some 2 inch carbon fiber tubes in different lenths if anyone can use them for something,u/w cam housings,light housings,etc.I have 2 inch aluminum tubes as well.I also have the robotic joints that come with the tubes i get.

The south end of Juno Beach has been very good to me. In an area I refer to as "the Rocks."
I have found old shipwreck coins, lead sheeting, bronze spikes, and modern jewelry & coins. I was able to get out today for a few hours of detecting and found a piece of copper sheeting (with nail holes) down about 2 1/2 feet deep.

But about a mile north of the Rocks is where the county is dumping sand on the beach-see my pics from earlier. Today, the dredge vessel was back on site-coming up from Palm Beach inlet late in the afternoon. In a week or so my prime hunting spot should be under about 4 feet of brand new 'beach sand.' They are projected to go as far south as the Seminole golf course.

Sad state of affairs. That extra 4 ft is going to keep debris from depositing good on the beach and push it back into the water. That is what I found up above Turtle Trail. Was really ticked as I had found some interesting heavily encrusted objects there before. After the re-nourishment there wasn't anything to find.

So did you search any of the new dredge ?

No. But I did notice there was a number of chunks of coral on the beach, which is not something you usually see. Of course, I think this is related to the recent dredge work.

Ivan, only if it is living coral. Dead coral is just rock.

once run thru a dredges impellers you bet its dead -- just like anything else would be -- but seriously if they are killing live coral their in a world of hurt . -- any treasure hunter caught damaging coral in any way would be hung out to dry
