Decided to go metal detecting one last time before it gets cold, boy am i glad i did..... I had been hunting a local Fair Ground and have found lots of barber dimes mercs and wheats, but for some reason i decided to go to a Fair Ground 25 miles away that i had only been to once before... The weather was perfect ground was perfect and so was my find for the day. An old man probably 80 years old showed up about 20 minutes after i did with a metal detector that was covered with duc tape.... Ask me if id found anything and showed him my only find to that point a 1916-s barber dime.. He then told me i was in the wrong place, that he had hunted this fair for 30 years and had never found anything where i was hunting... Glad i ignored him...I was hunting the spot where the horse stables used to be... Five minutes after he left I got a descent 82 VDI hit that was 0.0" Got to be a can so i ignored it moved on, ended up back in that area got the same hit.. So i decided to get rid of the can that was there about 2" down. Scanned it agaion same 82 VDI only this time it was faint and 8" deep... Dug it out BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!1901 s Barber Quarter G-4 Maybe G-6 I about fainted when i looked up the current value..... $4800.00 Still have to get it slabed and graded, WOW. I later found a 1913 p barber quarter about 8 feet away 8" down that looks wonderful, full liberty probably VF...... Not a bad day in a place where i wasnt supposed to find anything... The old man later showed me his find for the day including 53 quarters, all clad, apparently he knows how to use the duc tape covered detector pretty well.. But he says he cant get much deeper than 4 inches.. Got to love the DFX........

Isnt it cool that so many people can be so jealous and envious, and yet be so extremely happy for you all at the same time!...What a great bunch!
Congrats on a stellar find......WTG.....Joe

Just saw your post, fantastic. One of the rarest quarters we all dream about finding. Nice going.

Now about encapsulating: There are many out there who do this. Don't settle for 3rd party, off the wall, or unknowns to grade and encapsulate you're coin. Go with one of the best. Personally, I used ANACS to get some of my coins graded with fast turnaround, and great satisfaction. But here are just a few...........

Fantastic stuff!!!

I have a friend who found a key date seated quarter, he sent it in for grading, well PCGS came back with edge damage and cleaning damage, it was a serious blow to the overall worth of the coin... He NEVER wiped it clean, it had no scratches and I missed it by four feet... ;D

Encapsulation is fine but remember it is tough to get the coin out of the plastic if your not into the grade they give you... I can guarantee they will hit you with cleaning and environmental damage.

The coin is going to ANACS for AUTHENTICATION only. This is being done to avoid any remarks on the label about minor scratches, cleaning or other issues that could result in net grading.
