Decided to go metal detecting one last time before it gets cold, boy am i glad i did..... I had been hunting a local Fair Ground and have found lots of barber dimes mercs and wheats, but for some reason i decided to go to a Fair Ground 25 miles away that i had only been to once before... The weather was perfect ground was perfect and so was my find for the day. An old man probably 80 years old showed up about 20 minutes after i did with a metal detector that was covered with duc tape.... Ask me if id found anything and showed him my only find to that point a 1916-s barber dime.. He then told me i was in the wrong place, that he had hunted this fair for 30 years and had never found anything where i was hunting... Glad i ignored him...I was hunting the spot where the horse stables used to be... Five minutes after he left I got a descent 82 VDI hit that was 0.0" Got to be a can so i ignored it moved on, ended up back in that area got the same hit.. So i decided to get rid of the can that was there about 2" down. Scanned it agaion same 82 VDI only this time it was faint and 8" deep... Dug it out BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!1901 s Barber Quarter G-4 Maybe G-6 I about fainted when i looked up the current value..... $4800.00 Still have to get it slabed and graded, WOW. I later found a 1913 p barber quarter about 8 feet away 8" down that looks wonderful, full liberty probably VF...... Not a bad day in a place where i wasnt supposed to find anything... The old man later showed me his find for the day including 53 quarters, all clad, apparently he knows how to use the duc tape covered detector pretty well.. But he says he cant get much deeper than 4 inches.. Got to love the DFX........

Definitely one of the top finds on TNET. Congrats...G4 to G6 looks about right...looks like some slide marks from wiping the dirt off (big no-no)...probably a 5 grand coin in the correct holder (PCGS or NGC)...don't send it anywhere else...do get it graded and certified..there is alot of counterfeits of this date/mm....don't clean it anymore, it will only decrease in value.

Belongs on the "Best of Treasurenet". This is a true rarity. The key to the series.

Nice job
Doug

If you don't NEED the money now--sock it away in a safe place as an investment. The 1916D Merc dime doubled in value in less than 10 years. That quarter should do at least that good. ;D

And, by the way. That old man just may have had his detector in cammo. ( duct tape ). Several years ago I read a tip in a TH publication that suggested if you "dirty-up" your new looking detector with masking tape, nonmetallic paint sprayed in a random spot or two--junking it up more or less; the punk thieves would think it wouldn't be worth stealing. I cammo'd my Bandido II and will soon do the same to my new DeLeon and recently purchased Detector Pro Diver. That tip sounded good back then and even BETTER today. That old man's detector could have been in pristine condition; just disguised to protect him from being hassled by street punks. ;)

That is one amazing find!
Congratulations.

Wow!!! Super Find, Congrats!!!
The one you have there is in much better condition than the one on ebay,, ;D
Continued Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Third dug 1901-S I've ever seen and its on my wish list!! High dollar coin that looks great in any condition. I agree that if you can have it slabbed then stashed awya, preferably in the ground close to me with a map so it can be easily found by me(I will pay for the shipping of the map)!! Anyways, congrats on a beauty!!

Yep, that's a beauty!!! I'd bettter have been wearing my brown slacks if I'd found that one.

WTG!,

Wow! Thats what I love about this hobby. One of the few out there that can pay for itself....Steve

What a heart stopper..
Congrats....
That is a fantastic find......
I only wish the 1901 O that I found last year was an S
It grades VF + Looks like it was lost in 1901
Once again congrats.....

I'll speak for my nephew on this one. He's going to have it slabbed but only authenticated and not graded.

He also promised me first chance if he decides to sell it ;D

wow what a day

congrats

Incredible find,Im guessing we will be seeing that one up on the banner. Im never real clear on hunting around fairgrounds, most of the ones around me are all fenced off. I do know where serveral are out in the country but thought they are private property,do you ask anyone or just hunt? Congratulations on the find of a lifetime,in the ground is the only place anyone is likely to find one of these rare date coins,HH...Shoot

NOW WHY THE HELL ISN'T A $5,000 TO $7,000 COIN ON THE BANNER YET???? GET WITH IT! THIS COIN IS MORE VALUABLE THEN MOST OF THE FINDS UP THERE CURRENTLY!!!

(Note to the finder of this beauty: If this doesn't end up on the banner by the end of the week, change the title to "$5,000 coin found this week!!!" Make it all in caps...this thread needs more hits than it's gotten...and it didn't even get a reply on Nov. 5th!)

Congratulations!

We just ask either a fair board member or the caretaker. In this case we asked the caretaker of the fairgrounds property for permission to hunt a couple of months ago. The area where this was found was near some old grandstands that were torn down years ago, but there is still a bit of a foundation left.

Do you realize what the chances are of finding the rarest of them all? :o

Good fortune was really with you..finding one while MDing may never happen to anyone again ever!!

Congrats,
Nat
