When I write hoax I mean ,no treasure squirreled away that the papers can lead to.

I think to most folks a "hoax" represents the intent to deceive, so perhaps hoax isn't an accurate depiction of the true nature of the narration? There are certain elements within the narration that allow it to contain a sense of realism and accuracy and yet there also exist identifiable inaccuracies in the tale that bite away at the narration's credibility. There could be a few reasons why these elements exist in the narration, a few of them perhaps explaining the identified dependencies that exist in the narration, one of these perhaps being that the author simply thought that he was writing the truth as he knew it to be? Another might be that the author had good reason for providing the discrepancies? But the real nudge in determining any of this resides around the "fact" that nobody has been able to confirm anything in the narration regarding the grand adventure or the existence of a TJB during the era. It's this complete absence of connecting facts that lends itself so readily to both the fictionalist and the true believer. The fictionalist can use this complete absence of fact to substantiate his opinion while this same absence of fact also allows the true believer to manifest and manufacture whatever he chooses. So in my mind neither side has anything conclusive to support their opinions other then those details we know for sure to be inaccurate.

MAYBE, everyone were just being "snookered"... OR! MAYBE it WAS a HOAX... to deceive/mislead the FEDS looking for the CSA Treasury, last seen in Lynchburg, Va.; State CAPITAL of Virginia (April 7-10, 1865). Maj. F.C. Hutter (CSA PAYMASTER) lived there during the CONFEDERATE WAR, being "called to Richmond, Va. as needed...

...or Newton Hazelwood knew about the CSA treasury and general area where it was last believed to be, but used the eale Papers as a ruse and cover getting the Hart brothers to aid in his search. All Confederate assets were forfeit to the Federal government and would be claimed by the US government, BUT THE BEALE WOULD BE FREE FROM THIS CLAIM.

I think THIS is the REAL "story", which PV was alluding to with his LAST book on the Beale Treasure... CONFEDERATE TREASURE COVER-UP: Duty, Honor, & Deceit. Geeeezzz.....now you guys sound like Jean. Hazzlewood's copies came from the original source, the publication. Most likely he was a hopeful true believer as well.
