Is there any way to tell if this is from a shipwreck?

the far east chinese / asain made royal or high ranking folks jewelry in the 1715 fleet was often of stunning workmanship -- the skills of the oriental jewelers were second to none, and could match or beat most modern jewelers skills --they were much better that the crude "sand cast" stuff made in the new world or spain.

look at the dragon whistle chain and its fine workmanship. as a sample of their skills.

Is it just me or does this look like a sea turtle?

its you --lol-- do me a favor relicdude 07 --please on the back side veiw blow it up --on the rear below the two center emeralds and the 1 st side ways mounted one on the downleg of the cross theres a mark of some sort--- about where the rear of the bigger diamond would be * --could be very interesting looks like a "3"--but I can not make it out easily. --its the the lower leg area area on the rear similar to your upper leg you show on the front.

Or maybe a frog...I tried to do it ivan ,and it looked like crap. The 3 was so fuzzy when i inlarged it.Pcolaboy may see this and he can just look at the computer and make it do stuff ;D I have a hard time .

the main thing is there is a mark there now what is it? :icon_scratch:

this may very well be the tell tale mark....this is what i see

best i can do with what i have to work with...
the cross appears flat and shiny
the bottom part appears to be letters in a tight row

Something I noticed , on the backside where the diamonds are mounted, the mounts are enclosed, I thought real diamonds didn't need to be mounted like this to show their fire? The emeralds are not enclosed on the backside and they do not throw fire. Correct me if I'm wrong......NGE

Information for you and your friends. I am GIA certified in diamonds. I also had a friend of mine who is certified in colored stones to confirm what I thought. The diamonds are natural and the cut is over two hundred years old. The emeralds are natural and are also cut during some time long ago.

The cross is three inches high and two inches wide. It is 18k gold (tested) and weights 23 grams. It has 15 diamonds and 14 emeralds. Combined diamond weight is approximately one and one-half carats. Approximate weight of all emeralds - five carats.

The piece is breath-taking. I do think we have a beautiful piece of history here. My feelings all along is that this cross is a win-win. I win a little and some one some where wins too.

Please push all this info along - and if anyone has questions please let me know. THANKS!

Edna

Diverlynn, so then what your friend is saying that it is quite possible that all stones involved are cut in the old mine cut style meaning no points on bottom ends, but flat, so then when ya look straight at them, they look like they have holes all the way through them......NGE

Thank you DL, I've read back through the years , looked at many of the post that you, Robert , Ivan , and many others have made, I find you all to be amazing individuals and am humbled by your knowledge and perseverance in this underwater world of discovery...........God bless you all......and have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year...........Sincerely........................Limo Bob

the type of design used in this bit of jewelry is an very very old style --the stones are cut and mounted in a old fashioned design . thru the years certain ways and methods of cutting and mounting gemstones in jewelry were in and then out of favor ,--- which is exactly what I meant when I said earlier --- "it has a old style design look to it"---the item very well could be 300 years old -- but was it "treasure fleet" jewelry who knows ? ---the small mark on the rear needs farther inspection I say . --Ivan

I'd like to take a look at it . It looks period from the pic

I'm not an expert but I know a little about old jewlery. I'm in sanford and could meet you over in NSB, i have buyers.

Over 20 years ago a friend told me (possibly a rumor)about a surfer finding a 12 inch emerald cross in the dunes at ponce inlet on the NSB side.My friend said he knew the surfer but when i asked if he could introduce me to him so i could see the cross and get some pics of it.He said he lost touch with him.Maybe this is the cross the surfer found but by the time the story gets told thru several people the cross gets smaller. But then again just another rumor without proof.

Usually as the stories are told and passed along the tales get bigger!

Hi Lynn: It's going to be difficult proving it came off a wreck but you can get a better handle on age and origin. Then, knowing where it was found could lead to more research that could tell you if it may have come off a wreck. It's all in the research but you know that already. I would suggest taking it to Emeralds International in Key West. They can tell you if the Emeralds are cut in the old way and their probable origin. They can also do a very accurate appraisal for you.

If you can get the name f the surfer and the area he liked to surf, there is a good chance he can be tracked down. Surfers are territorial, they like certain breaks. If he was a regular in a certain area, someone will know where he moved onto. He can also be tracked down thru the wonderful world of cyber space.

There are a number of "surfer stories" floating around the treasure beaches, some have merit, some don't but all are interesting to contemplate. Aquanut and I know one that we believe to be accurate but due to circumstances have never been able to fully check out.

Anyway, that might put you on the right track. An emerald cross wold certainly be worth putting some research time into. Just curious, what's the price on the cross right mow????

the surfer story wasnt related to this cross ..... just someone else suggested that this MAY be the one found by the surfer and the story embellished over the years...as the surfer cross was reported to be 12" tall and the cross in question was purchased at an estate sale several years ago and is 3" by 2" .....i know nothing about old jewelry but just stating what i understood to read in the above posts .....also the original poster stated clearly that the owner doesnt want to sell the piece until it is unquestionably evaluated...correct me if i am wrong ....BTW this piece is beautiful and undoubtedly very valuable whether shipwreck related or not
