Can you see the backhoe on top?
It's time for pitchforks and shovels.

A mound used for fill dirt at a Sams Club?

The county should be embarrassed at the idea. How horrible and unfortunate.

Re: Indian Mound to be destroyed

I for one am speechless! :o

No, wait a second, no I'm not, I'm 'gobsmacked' (to borrow a phrase from our British friends).

To quote from the article; "Oxford Mayor Leon Smith and City Project Manager Fred Denney said it was used to send smoke signals." Yeah, by their job titles they seem like experts on this issue.

Also; "Council President Chris Spurlin said there is no proof the site holds human remains." BECAUSE NO ONE'S LOOKED, YOU DUMBA$$.

Re: Indian Mound to be destroyed

Shocking and Unbelievable. :-\

Good point. It does seem like there is a BIG double standard going on. But you see, us ordinary people do not "grease the wheels" with our big bucks and development offers.

Money runs the world, and it is quite sad. :-\

Re: Indian Mound to be destroyed

I am embarrassed to say that this is very typical southern politics in step in true fashion of the good ole boy net work. Most interesting to me was this....The $2.6 million no-bid CDA contract for preparing the Sam's site went to Oxford-based Taylor Corp. That money came from the sale of city property to Georgia-based developers Abernathy and Timberlake and from additional money provided by the city.

In Alabama, CDAs are exempt from bid laws, meaning contracts can go to whichever company the board chooses.

Oxford's CDA board and its actions have multiple connections to Smith's political fundraising:

No bid law. What a joke the bums each got a thousand bucks and a Sam's club.
Also did you see the quote at the bottom of the article about the indian that worked for the company?? He said he did not feel a presence of ancient burials. That's hilarious. Wonder what he really does for a living? They said they did not find much at the site but admit it was built by hand by ancients. I am not sure they found much at that one pyramid in Egypt either. Maybe they want a Sam's club. Sam Walden is doing doughnuts in his grave right now. Yeah baby made in China.
Good post. I am not sure what lesson we learn here. Wish the big press would get a hold of this one maybe someone left alive in Hollywood can save it?

Re: Indian Mound to be destroyed

if they are going to "kill " the site at least let "normal" folks screen the fill first (except for the fact you would most likely find remains and thus shut it down in its tracks ) :icon_thumright:

Re: Indian Mound to be destroyed

This is an OUTRAGE!!! I'm so mad I probably should refrain from further comment because I may not be rational. And there are folks who have gotten arrested for picking up a point out of the river here. Double standard is one complaint, but the big loss is that huge ancient earthworks that will be gone forever.

Re: Indian Mound to be destroyed

That makes me sick! >:(
If you have enough $$$ you can get away with anything! >:( It seems like the feds are willing to turn their heads for big business! Now if someone went there & found an Arrowhead or something you can bet they would be hauled off quicker then you could blink!!!

Thanks for posting this topic!

Re: Indian Mound to be destroyed

Tearing down a historical mound that might, and probably contains remains just to get fill for a WalMart. That makes me sick. I will call the town of Oxford and complain...Living in Pa, that is the least that I can do..

Note: I just called the Mayor's office. His secretary, was very nice, but stated that the office had no official comment. If you would like to voice your opinion please call Mayor Smith and his office at (256) 831- 7510. I'm sure that the office staff would like to speak with all of us here on TreasureNet.

Re: Indian Mound to be destroyed

that mound is probably 200 ft tall, maybe more, unless the mound is more to the top and just sits on the large hill.anyways that is a huge mound,I cant imagine what is in there.Kind of hard to believe that it has never been dug by archys or made into a historical landmark.this isnt some little mound out in bfe that no one knows is there.I am having a problem seeing how this mound could have been overlooked for so long and then someone decides to use it as fill dirt.doesnt make any sense. If that were here in ohio it would be a centerpiece to a national park.hopefully someone that isnt corrrrupt and has the authority will step in and put a stop to this unbelievable destruction.

Re: Indian Mound to be destroyed

I just called from Georgia. The secretary took my call and was friendly about it. I told her the story was becoming national news and I wanted to voice my opposition to the destruction of the mound. She took my last name and what state I am in. No contact info.
