Indian Mound to be destroyed(Sad Update)

Re: Indian Mound to be destroyed(Update)

I am not sure where they are on this. It is very possible that there are no remains there but it was a spitual place. For all I know it could already be dozed into oblivion. Have not kept up with this. Any new staus reports? Sams club/Walmart here built on a big site and nothing was ever said. Very common in this area and the South.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

When this was going on I had the local AP run a story on it. Amazing the attitudes of the local gov on Ala. I am southern and still do not understand the good ole boy mentality when it comes to this stuff.

That is a sad state of Goverment officials..................Not stopping it
That would never happen in Arkansas..............Walmart/Sams Club have some of the most strict construction site rules in the State-and they make contractors no right off they enforce them with fine's..........$$,
I'am sure they would have their contractor back off from that a long time ago...........
It looks like the State and Local Goverment did not care......

Wal-mart, Fed-Ex, Blue cross Blue shield ins, Tennessee Aquaruim, University of Tennessee@Chattanooga the list is endless all built on village sites here in Chattanooga. Trust me if they wanna build on one in ANY southern state its going to happen. China makes the money running those red neck specials. :angry4:
Wal-Mart is a corporation. They bid out their site work and construction. Their standards are no diffrent from one state to the next. Sometimes local government does some site work to make a tract of land appealing to developers.

All of our Walmarts are just a pimple on the butts of Time.

These magnificent earthen mounds, erected by a proud and once mighty people (see maybe a similarity here with how someone might view us in the future?) who walked this same land hundreds of years ago, and that have stood the test of time are now to be destroyed for a zit that even we would not wish to be remembered for.

'Mayor' smith excepted.

May his name ever be attached to this destruction and the robbery of our childrens' cultural heritage.

Absolutely disgusting!!!! Amazing how some people get away with destroying an entire mound, and some people get into trouble for picking up an artifact off the ground. I just wonder who ended up with all the artifacts from this mound, I am sure it was full of some pretty cool artifacts.

Listen a bid goes out to a General contractor. Wal-Mart has a list of contractors that it likes to use depending upon the area of the country. Each contractor is obligated to make sure there is not any historical significance involved with the site. They hire and retain Archeology firms to test and research the sites.,If items are found it is then determined if it has enough historical significance for further study.
Say they are finding graves with cultural goods. Ok they have X amount of time to excavate the site. Say its a huge site and they have found only one fourth of the burials and they all have similar items. Say hundreds of points and celts so far and typical woodland pottery. Time runs out dozers move in site work begins. They have a sampling of the area nothing really new is found that has not been seen before. Wal-Mart or who ever has fullfield their Archaeological obligations.
If they find surface points and stuff it can just be considered a random camp and not worth even investigating further.
I know the contractors that build Wal-marts. I have spoken with Archaeologist about such sites. The Ala site was several sites in that area. The one large one supposedly had nothing in it. The second site that seemed to disappear overnight seemed to have been loaded. That is why it disappeared over nite to keep it from slowing up future construction.
I know of parking lots going in.They hit bone/pottery. That night they get gravel in and tamped and ready for asphalt. Just bury and cover it quick or it will hold up the job and the money. Its the sad truth that everything can not be saved. My big question is where does most that stuff end up? Museums do not have room for a 1000 examples of the same thing. :icon_scratch:

Let me reply again. I just called and asked about procedures on say Wal-marts. The site survey is completed before the contractor begins. The Engineering firm doing the site survey would be the one to retain the Arch firm. I was thinking Contractor based on Gov work.
I correct myself
