Detector(s) used
ace 250/AT PRO
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I'll try to keep this brief,
I just started metal detecting about 3-4 months ago. Since then I've found about $50.00 in clad and a few odd and end medallions and stuff. Nothing notable. I've been getting very frustrated because I was just dying to find something besides clad. Well after working overnights last night, I went out to a local park that dates to about the 1940's. Not old but figure there's a chance of silver. I don't believe it's been hunted much, as I've pulled 50 cent pieces out of there before and clad is everywhere. Well today started no different. clad, clad clad. 1965 dime (damnit), 1965 dime (damnit), 1965 quater(damnit), 1960 penny( ok now someone upstairs is laughing at me). Well i dug for a few more hours, batteries were starting to run out and I went back to the truck to check for more. I didnt have any with me and decided I'd detect right around the truck for a few more minutes. Well right off the edge of the parking lot I get a signal (I cant remember what it came in as but im pretty sure a penny on my ace 250). Was only 2 inches deep. Dug it out and imagine my surprise when not one but two Indian had pennies stuck together! 1891 and 1863. Sorry for the low quality photos, all as I have is my phone. They're in pretty rough shape but i was able to read the dates off them. 1.jpg2.jpg3.jpg4.jpg

Nice saves!

But, you do know it's too late to get out now, right?

Finding nothing but clad it's a little easier. But, now? After you've uncovered a couple nice old coins? Nope. You're stuck for life now. ;)

HH!

Sweet indian heads.... gotta love the fact that one is a fatty copper/nickel variety one too.

Congrats. I'm jealous. still waiting for my first - let alone second - IH find.

Yeah Lucky Larry ! I've been trying for nine years to find an I H -Last week I went on a road trip to some beautiful towns in south west Colorado , found some
20's and 30's Lincolns , but no IH's yet - However ..... a dear friend of our family gave me a 100 ounce fine silver ENGLEHART bar !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so I can live
without my IH for now !

nice. for some reason, I think it's cool when someone digs an indian head that is dated from the civil war.

Nice, I'd like to find at least one of those.

I love those IH cents- great finds! On my Ace250 they come in one notch lower than the penny notch- because (I assume) they are bronze. Best of luck to you in finding more.

Hey...... any day you dig an Indian head is a good day. Many years ago I got into a yard loaded with them. Got my first Large Cent there as well. Since then they are few and far between. Congrats on a great find. :icon_thumleft:

that's some kind of dear friend!

Just think. Lincoln was still alive when that 1863 penny was minted. Wow!

you all are right on re special place in our hearts for IHs. this post - and responses to it - started me wondering why this is so. clearly, other coins are rarer, more valuable - face value or spot -, older and aesthetically more pleasing. for me its the period, ie. Civil war, Lincoln..as noted by others.
I thought it might be interesting if others identified the coin that is nearest and dearest to their heart, and why it is so. for the snarky out there, I'm talking about intrinsic value, not extrinsic.

I would detect more in that area close to where you parked our vehicle. Most people head toward the center of the park. We used to go to Danville, Va every Saturday from Charlotte,N.C,. to detect a park that was loaded with old coins for about 2 years. Where we parked our car there was a large signal just beyond the curb which sounded like a large can. My friends wife finally dug it to get it out of the way. It turned out to be a Beautiful U. S. Civil War Box Plate. She approached me she had it next to her chest, I thought she was having another heart attack. I paid her back, I told her to hold out her hand, a dropped 4 Barber Dimes in her hand that I just dug from 1 hole.He husband got 8 V-Nickel's that day off a hill side. This was in the early 1980's. Pictures of 2 coins I dug off the beach Aug 15 ,2013,
