I don't know much about it however I have read that the amount of impurities is the biggest factor. Others can answer the question better.

Borax is worthy of trying… 3 Mule Team, available at most big box stores and most grocery stores… Million and one uses for borax…..great stuff to keep on hand!
Use as a flux and you can melt a little inside your crucible, be sure to spread it all around inside the crucible and then dump out any excess… Do this prior to melting/refining, it helps prevent sticking and aids in removal of the “gunk” (impurities).

It's proportionate to Gold you're going to melt not baking soda but washing soda and borax equal parts. There is a lot of different mixes depending on what you're working with.
