If it's real it will be my best find yet

Went out and hit the wet sand today and found there was a few swingers in the cuts so i decided to walk way down the beach away from everyone, I'm sure glad i did after about an hour i found a crematory tag. I said a little pray and sent it out to the depths. as i was turning around i got a beep and dug the silver ring. the hair went up on my neck with a couple goose bumps. i looked out to the water and asked if i could find something better with gold, haha 20 minutes later i found this Rolex watch, The hair really stood up then chills even. I gave it a shake and the second hand started to move, and the watch had a lot of encrusting on the stainless and some on the crystal. A little work took most of it off. After talking to a friend on here that has some knowledge about these i sent him a few pictures and described and answered all the questions i could. He then said everything sounds like its the real deal but you still have to take it to the Jewelers just to make sure. If it is i think ill have it repaired, I always wanted one so now maybe i have one.......I'll post tomorrow if its real thanks for looking
Kent
UPDATE;; After bringing the watch to the jewelers i'm happy to say that it came back as a real ROLEX now to have it repaiered will be $500-$700 :)

Thanks Romeo, I got three years of diggin and still can't recognize aluminum :laughing7:..
It's whats inside that watch that counts, (the yellow parts are good too)
I 'watch shopped' a couple years back, and those Subs were BIG money.
Congrats again Plymouthian !!

And the prices have only gone up since then.

So did you buy anything to lose for one of us to find? :) I've been watch shopping steady since 2009. :laughing7:

:laughing9: That is funny :laughing9:

I didn't purchase on that day,
only because the debit card I was using wouldn't work, some comm issue on a saturday with my ex bank :dontknow:
What I had chosen was a stainless & black Rolex Sub. Rather disappointing after spending the entire day
making the decision on what to buy, and by the next day my watch fever had cooled.

I don't lose much, but I do have misplacement issues ... the sweet part of that is when some long forgotten loss shows up in a cupcake pan in the cupboard . such is life for the collector of interesting small bits.
I read some of the watch collector forums, it's the same thrill of the hunt we all crave, finding those treasures then doing a little show off to others who can appreciate what we got.
Investment Grade watches seem to be a good place to store wealth, as long as we have some sort of working economy.
Some of the top end makers (Vacheron, B&M, Patek) have been making timepieces since the 18th century.
Over the years I've picked up a fair assortment of timepieces,
I ended up getting my 'keeper' watch out of a $3 box of watches picked up at my favorite annual Church Sale.
There were 3 ladies watches in 14k, two Swiss mens autos, and a bunch of junkers hiding the goods.
I had the 1950s White 14k JJ subdial second dress auto refurbished and a new mainspring, bet it was a gift that was never worn as the original crystal and delicate etching on the bezel show no dings or wear.
The other Swiss was a 'Desta Incabloc' auto in stainless, a scarce but not valuable piece.
I've learned that there were many small Swiss manufacturers who you never hear about, they specialized in making watches for department store branding, I have another brand labelled with the 'Incabloc' standard.
I don't have to worry about losing mine cause I don't wear a watch except for 'dress up occasions' which are rare for me.
This Church Sale is a 'must attend' for me now and it's coming up again soon, it has treasure every year,
last one got me a creamer clearly marked 'Sterling' and exactly 3 Tr oz for a buck, no joke, small potatoes but I'm happy with a 10,000% ROI (silver was running $33), too bad there weren't 1000 of them available :BangHead:

Now that I know you are knowledgeable on watches (I should have known :) ).
I wonder if you can help with the provenance of a piece that my sister picked up,
It is an Omega Speedmaster Professional in 14k yellow, these were the Nasa approved timepiece for the Apollo landings,
and a very popular watch.
The significance of this one is it's case back is a die struck image of the lunar landing.
I've spent lots of time looking for a duplicate of this watch in vain, can't imagine that it's a one off.
Maybe you can help with this one.
Apologies for the hijack Plymouthian, Congrats Again :hello:

Some guy told me he lost his on a beach around here a couple years ago. I dream of finding on, congrats on actually doing it!

I was pretty good at losing watches in my early 20s, but managed to hang on to one for 11 years, and then another for quite a few more, so I'm very confident I'm ok now. I better be or I'd be knocking my head against the wall for being so stupid.

I am definitely not knowledgeable about watches. All I know is a large number of brands by name, and to recognize most of the higher end stuff when I see it. After that, I'm an idiot about them, but that's ok because I'm not interested in the same way I am for something like coins and relics. Both watches and coins is something that was introduced to me at a very early age and always stuck with me. Relics didn't happen until I started detecting.

You should post here. Pics would help a lot, but chances are even a good description might get you a model number to compare too.

Great find! I've had one since I was stationed in Germany and have a few opportunities to buy 'copies'.
The phony Rolex's I've seen will not have the v. clear, well defined lettering on the face like yours has, or have the crest on the wind knob. The best test I've used is that the real deal will be somewhat heavy--copies are always cheap and very light weight. The fish-eye over the date looks authentic, as the phonys are flat or non-existant and the Rolex crystal is saphire. The wind knob should screw in tight to seal it from water entry and when un-screwed will then allow it to be wound up and when pulled all the way out will allow the time to be set.
Again, great find! Hope this info was helpfull!

Rolex had acrylic crystals also fyi. Great find..

My opinion...save your money on the repair, just put a good band on it and wear it proudly, crust and all ! That Submariner should be fine inside.

Thanks for the link, my best guess (and hope) is that the Omega may be a very limited edition that was given to nasa bigwigs or maybe the astronauts :occasion14:

Btw, I was pretty sure you knew about everything :laughing7:

It very will could be a limited edition, but Omega really used the whole moon thing quite a bit, so not really a surprise to have a connection there.

I know everything about everything else. :headbang:

Mods would know better, criteria I see for banners is
1) Historical significance/rarity
2) Eye appeal/good photos
3) Monetary Value
4) number of banner votes
5) not getting 2 or 3 banners in the previous month.
A genuine Rolex is a pretty rare find, and it's value exceeds most items now up top,
I have seen many items I though should be up there and never made it,
A 5K find should be up there IMO, especially considering a lot of members here have expressed
that they are MD'ing for profit.
Squeeky wheels usually get some grease, so those who believe this belongs up top make sure
you get the votes in and explain why. I have, Good luck Plymouthian :hello:

You know the funny part, if one of the banner choosing people had found it I bet they'd look at it in a whole other way. Isn't it funny how things tend to work that way. I'd have to think at least once a month on average a fake Rolex gets posted, and everything is ....ahhh too bad. But then a real one comes up and it's not a no brainer pick. I would have thought so, it's a WORKING Rolex. Why do I have a funny feeling if someone found a beat to hell pocket watch with a very nicely silver engraved case and a post with a bunch of smileys, it would probably make it. :laughing7:

Ya you do :laughing7:
I figured it would be an easy find on the web somehere,
Did every web search I could think of and posted on another watch site, no one replied,
Hopefully I'll get results from the one you suggested

Indeed, that first sentence is enlightening.
One of the most important aspects is an attractive photo, I believe they think this entices advertisers.
(May have been told this in a 'Private' message from a mod prior to the most recent site sale).
I recall one particular recovery that got lots of votes, but did not get up top for a week or so.
It made it after several 'higher level' members kept insisting in their posts that it should be honored.
5-8K value recovery from a prolific and valued member? C'mon mods. Put this on top :hello2:

I appreciate your support guys. i find it funny that if it was a gold coin it would be up there, and a lot more of them are found than a Rolex, and Rolex's carry a lot more value than the average gold coin. i guess people just dont vote on jewelry because you really dont see many beach hunters make the banner so i guess i kinda have to wonder why sometimes we bother posting at all if its never gonna get the credit it deserves. thanks again guys and good luck out there
