I found a deal on a detector? Or maybe not? What do ya think of the Ace 250?

I found this on eBay today

I was curious what everyone thinks of this detector:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=505&item=4968573045&rd=1

Are these any good? Is this a good price?

I'm thinking of picking one of these up for my 9 and 6 year old sons ( there is a photo of my boys and family in the mug shot section). It looks like a light unit, I'm just not sure if it works.
I'd like to get them something decent to use. Not some all plastic junk for $40 or something, but a decent unit that will actually have tone id and find gold and coins. You all understand what I mean,....I want them to get excited by actually finding stuff :)

Any suggestions on what models are light for little guys and what units are decent for beginners.

Yep,

That's sums up just about exactly what I have found/read about the 250 as well. I think I've pretty much made my decision now. The 250 has all the features they need to start and room to grow. It's lite and that's big plus!

Thanks for taking the time to research a bit on the model Lowbatts. You've been a big help!

So has everyone else for that matter! Thanks Everyone :)

I'll let everyone know how the 250 works out for my boys. Keep looking for the follow up posts on that topic.

Quite frankly I've never been a big fan of Garrett but only because of the RF noise level they put out that would chatter on most nearby detectors.? Can't find one bad word about the ACE 250.? It really looks like Garrett has hit a home run with design, features and price in a detector that fits entry-level price and the high side of the mid level operational features.? But that's my take from reading posts not just from new people who have used it, but experienced people as well.

I hear you there Lowbatts,

but Garrett has made some changes with at least the GTI 2500 I know for sure (maybe the 1500 and 1350 too?)

I have a GTI 2500 and there's a feature that allows you to 'change' the freq. while hunting with other detectors close by! It works great as I've tried it while hunting with my son and was getting chattering noise.

I really wish Garrett would do 1 thing though (as he's done with the infinium only) and that is to give he machines more than 1 detecting freq.

My Fisher has found things my Garrett has left behind/scanned over! I detected my back yard with my Garrett 2 or 3 times over (then) took my Fisher cz20 over the same ground/spots and found merc dimes, etc. that the Garrett left behind/didn't recognize.

The dual freq. machines (or more than 2 freq.) machines are nice! I also have an Ex-cal 1000 which is 17 freq.

The main reason I keep/kept my Garrett 2500 since buying a dual freq, machine is, because, I bought the 2 box depth multiplier for it to hunt for cache's and deep large relics, etc. I will also be using it for searching out "bottle dumps" on old farms this spring/summer!

Sounds like the CZ-20 is gonna be nice when I get it! Out hunted your 2500, wow! Not bad :)

The CZ-20 would be nice for my boys IF it didn't way a ton! My little guy is 6 and he struggle with my 1280X,....without the control box mounted on the handle :)

Yeah- you will like it a lot Rod,

it's not that the Garrett doesn't go deep, it's just that with 2 or more freq. machine/s the detector/s are able to identify more accurately what is under the coil (in most cases)!

I'll let ya know how it works out. It's on the way right now, shipped UPS today :) Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow, it's coming from just across the state :)

Hey Lone,

How does that pinpointer button work on it? Does it work well?

Rod

The Infinium is PI, very different technology from the other machines, all VLF. ?I thought long and hard about getting one when they came out, seemed they did a great job there. ?Just not ready to go PI yet. ?As for multi-freq, Minelab transmits 17 freqs if you count harmonics, in fact they transmit seemingly countless frequencies. ?But so do single frequency machines. ?

The operational frequencies on the Fisher units represent the fundamental and 1st order harmonic with enough usable signal to process in the RX circuitry. ?Same goes for Minelab. ?They do not say they use all those frequencies they say they transmit and since it's in the used signal (rx) signal that actual information is processed, it's marketing hype. ?Still waiting for that next really big step in detection technology and have no hair-brained schemes myself but I'm sure I'll like it when I see it!

Pinpoint button works like a charm, it actually makes the machine go into a VCO/all metal mode while pressing/holding the button down. and you can pinpiont within a 2in diam. when you get good with it!

?

Ok, I'm confused? Doesn't your CZ-20 have pinpoint button on the face controls? I was asking if that feature worked well?

Maybe your 5 year old machine doesn't have it? Maybe that's a newer feature, I don't know.

Does your machine have the pinpoint button on it?

Rod

Cool :)

I was posting my previous message when you answered my question. That's good to hear that it works like a charm!

I'm gettin' excited over here :) ;D

Lowbatts,

I'm with you. I absolutely HATE marketing Hype. It just reminds me of a used car salesman. Ooops, hope I'm not offending anyone with that comment. It's the nature of the car salesman that I dislike. It's the nature of marketing that I dislike!

Rod

Just give me the facts, that's all, I'm smart enough to figure out what I want. NO BS PLEASE :)

I hear ya there Lowbatts,

The infinium is my next piece of equipment going into my arsonal!

I've owned a whites surf master PI II in the past but, the infinium is "leaps and bounds" ahead of that machine!

Current equipment:

Fisher cz20

Garret GTI 2500 (with 2 imaging coils 9 in and 12 in) plus the 2 box depth multiplier

Minelab Ex-cal 1000 (10 in coil)

Whites MXT with standard coil, DD 1400 and the Excelerator 5" coil

also have all my own scuba diving gear (henderson wetsuit gear, zeagle BCD & regs, US diver mask/fins, and 2 tanks)...

Darod, do what I did and plant stuff for them to find. That'll fuel their fire, and each time their interest starts to wane, plant something else. You can find cheap but cool stuff that kids like at any ol' thrift store. It's just Santa Claus.

Still digging through the messages here, but definitely take it from Onion (and me): try the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. It's very light, and if you've been paying attention to Onion's posts, he finds more gold rings than anybody here, including those who have expensive machines and light-as-helium wallets (no offense meant). I'm 40 and having a blast with my Tracker IV.

You expressed a concern about an "all plastic POC", but then followed with concerns about how heavy a detector might be. Think about that one. ;) Plastic is the way to go unless you're also wanting to train these boys to be the next John Elway.

Vingamel,

All good points you have made. I'm going to stop by Kellyco and check out the 250, then I'll see what the Track IV is like in comparison.

The all plastic comment was aimed at the tiawan junk out there that is all plastic and doesn't work hardly at all. I know that there are some nice units out there that are all plastic. I'm not opposed to getting one of those for my boys, I just want one that works well like the BH Tracker IV and the Garrett 250.

Thanks for the input, it all helps me a great deal.

Rod

Hey Ving, no offense taken. There are a lot of us using high end machines and some of us (gasp) have found many more rings than Onion. We've also found many deeper and older coins. Among other things. Like to separate my finds by year in most cases. Have these old printer's block drawers. Here's a shot of one minus rings and necklace-sized chains. Also included a pic of four hours hunting from last year's first two carnie sites. First one was largely responsible for the pile which was over 70 bucks. Not to disparage, just to demonstrate. Been there, done that. I don't know if if I could have made all those finds with the BH Tracker IV, I'd like to think I could have if that was the machine I was stuck with. I do know I could not have found them all with my old BH, which I liked and used as well as I could, given it's limitations. But I DID find them all with my high end detectors and have seen comparable and better finds from users of other high end detectors. And of course, a couple carnie sites and a change exchange or two at the bank, and my wallet was too darn heavy so I bought another car. Chevy of course, the Caddie awaits next year's results.

Have fun!

I look at these glittery pictures, LowBatts, and I see the result of a lot of time and a lot of experience on your part. Good job. Give yourself the high fives instead of your machine. You've obviously got the stuff that counts--between your ears.

Hey Lowbatts,

I got the Fisher CZ-20 today in the mail. It worked out fine on that purchase :)

I didn't have time to take it out tonight, maybe I still might later after the boys are in bed.

Looks like a nice machine though! I'll let ya know how it does in a site I've hunted alread 3 times. I'm curious if it will find things the 1280X has passed over.

Rod

PS: Thoughs pics are amazing! Super work buddy :)

Can anyone offer some advice on settings for this baby?
