How do you keep yourself safe outdoors?

get the bear spray big can that frog the bounty hunter uses

In reading back over these posts it is obvious that those of us who dwell in a rural area face different dangerous situations than those who are urabanites. There's almost as much difference in one part of the big cities as there is between the previous dwellers. So, my advice is that if you are going into unfamiliar territory you should probably do a drive through and scope it out in advance. Unable to do that, it wouldn't hurt to check in with the local law enforcement to see if there are problem areas you might wish to avoid. And, they will know you are there and perhaps keep an eye out for you. A lot of advice seen herein may seem like overkill to some but it only takes once. Monty

I am not the sort of person who encounters such troubles. I'm sufficiently observant of my surroundings. Some folks I've known seem to have a black cloud follow them around. I avoid those people.

It seems to me that present times are a bit more complicated than I can remember, and much more stress. One has a right and duty to be prepared, and defend if necessary.

will pepper spray work on a dog? i feel like i am way more vulnerable to a dog attack than one by a person. hell, if pepper spray will work on both i might as well pick some up.

An alternative to pepper spray for keeping dogs away is vinegar. I've heard that a lot of mail folks carry a bottle of vinegar with a spray head set for "stream", not "spray". Since dogs have such a high level sense of smell, the vinegar, "streamed" on their faces Will distract their attention. ;D

The best way to keep yourself safe is to use your head!
A gun is a macho the and not to smart. If your hit over the head, they now have a gun.But a good thing to have is a small cartrage of pepper spray in your shirt pocket. This works on anykind of threat to you and bad guys would not think
to look in your shirt pocket anyway.Next is think were you are going and allways take a friend. And tell someone where you are going.A cell phone is good but don;t depend on it,many places don;t have reception anyways.
Next the weather can change in minutes! Bring a coat/sunglasses/water/a snack/
and a couple of trash bags(they can be used in case of rain and are light weight.
MOST OF ALL USE YOUR HEAD! think through you situation.

I say bulletize them, then give the carcase to the shark fishermen to use for bait!

As I can see, some people do not feel comfortable carring a gun. I myself do carry, but I do not carry everywere. If you do not carry some type of lethal protection you should stay completely out of bad areas, unless you are with MORE than one other person. 3 to 4 buddies would be safer that carrying a gun.
I mostly hunt alone, when I'm in a bad area I do not carry concealed, its right out in the open so everyone can see. I know this has helped me in the past.
I was hunting in a area that was not know for its friendliness, I seen out of the corner of my eye 4 guys looken me over and probably discussing how to take me down. All I did was reverse direction to give them a good view of what was on my side an all intrest in me faded.
Overall, the best way to stay safe is to avoid those areas or have buddies with you.

Carrying a gun out in the open is illegal here unless you are legitimately hunting game. And you aren't allowed to hunt game in the city limits. So, unless you are out in the boonies you couldn't legally carry a gun out in the open. The problem I have carrying concealed it trying to get to it in a hurry if I had to. With a coat , tool belt and both hands full of detector and digging tools, it's very difficult to get a pistol or revolver out of your waist band. Monty

I am constantly telling myself to be aware of your surroundings. With headphones on - it is very easy for someone to sneak up on you. My suggestion is - if your state allows it - get your Concealed Carry License. My god man - if you have the right - then spend the money on the license. Exercise your rights.

I also have a permit to carry, but do not always go armed. One other option
if being bothered is to hold onto a handful of dirt or sand & if they reach for or try to grab you throw the dirt into their eyes. Use your palm or a hammer fist
& strike them as hard as possible in the nose. While their eyes are watering, kick them with the side of your foot directly on the kneecap driving it backwards.
Practice that side kick with a hard snapping motion. It is effective on anyone & if done properly, they are going down. The knee is made to only bend one way. When they're down, either run or finish off the problem.

being an ex cop and prison guard...I sort of go prepared...I believe in the ole adage...better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it..

First I have a concealed weapon carry permit.. so what I carry is legal... on my side I carry a Kel Tec
380 or a 9mm Keltec pistol..I wear painters blue jeans and it is concealed in there..you never would
know I have a pistol.. secondly a cell phone ( charged and turned off ), and thirdly a little first aid kit
I put together...it is not fun getting out the woods with an injury ...so I keep a kit handy...and of course
all this goes in a small fanny pack ...weighs all of 6 lbs... extra water is nice as well as some food.. and
of course them mississippi mosquitos are vicious so insect repellent, a knife and a flashlight...go in the
pack also..except for the water...which goes on my side or the 4 wheeler...

I hope that everyone has a safe time detecting...but there is always someone or something that wants
to spoil it ...be prepared...and not a victim..

Man most of you people neeed to move to the country...Here where i live we have one stop light, small amount of traffic and everybody knows one another. Can't imagine carrying a gun or stin gun.jeeez. takes all the fun out of it...Why can't we all just get along ?????????????? rh

Where we hunt it is advisable to cary something, and know how to use it.
I have been treed by a bear and from then on I have carried.
A large frame S/W 44mag suits me perfect. that way both rifle and pistol are covered with the same ammo.

There are animals out here that get a little more than courious.
I don't plan on being treed again.

Be alert, be aware, be looking around more than just the ground, especially at night. Once had a friend that was almost robbed at the beach mding, The fellow wanted his watch, wallet, and detector. Him being a nice guy gave him the detector right away, across his face, over his head, etc.

If you do bring a friend like Colt, Smith, Wesson you better be willing and ready to use it if you show it.

Ladies or men you better fight for your life for it easily could be what you lose.

First aid kit, small survival kit, cell phone, water, folks knowing where your at helps too if your out in the woods looking. No different than hiking, hunting, fishing, or camping. If it isn't cold I wear my snake proof hunting boots in the woods

I think Ivan covered it very well, and in MS if you are a good law abiding citizen it is no problem to get a concealed firearm permit. In MS gun control means being able to hit your target, got to love it.

Well these days I carry a 9mm or 357 when needed. Why.? Well many years ago I was in a place in northern Lycoming County, Pa. looking for a place to photograph wild turkeys . This is a location that my family had hunted deer in many times. It was not hunting season at the time and while in the woods two guys with shot guns were following me , one on each side and out about 25 yards. If I stopped so did they. Well I droped into a tree fall waited a few moments and went back the way I had comein. Took off in my car..They were right behind me and followed me out to the main highway..I carry a gun now..

Hunt with friends, and i always carry a knife or two...no money for a nice 1911/1911-A1. :( >:( So, no need of a ccw yet.

I am fortunate to not have this issue where I live. But if you have concerns like this, just be sure to not to have credit cards etc in your wallet. Personalize your detector in some way that its absolutely unique for WHEN it shows up at a hawk shop (which will be near by, cuz the crackhead needs his stuff quick). The serial # on it is not an easy enough distinction. It'll show up.
If you don't put up a fight, you generally won't get hurt. A gun beats four aces in a card game, so if that's what your facing don't try to defend yourself. If I were this concerned I would get a concealed weapon permit, but stay safe.

I would like to meet the criminals that live in your state. If you really think you do not have to worry, you have a probelm.
I live in a rural area and work in a city that is not really that big.
Most of my hunting is done in out of the way places and even though there is not much crime i carry a gun also.
In the last couple of years around here crime against people has gone way up.Last year just up the street from where i work a women was attacked while running the track there. This place is in town and surronded by very busy streets.Even though she gave up her wallet they still attacked her and caused bodily harm. Then Friday night at a gas station right in the middle of town, while it was busy,a guy hit the clerk in the head with a gun and took all her money while she was at the gas pumps.
if these people now a days try to rob you they will not just take your stuff and go away. They do not want you top identify them or they just see your cooperation as weakness and beat you down for the fun of it.There have actually been 2 cases in Columbus Ohio where gangs of teens beat up people just for the fun of it.And one of the "gangs" were kids on there way home from a dance.None of them had ever been in trouble before. This was girls and boys.
Please be realistic.Anywhere we live and anywhere you go to hunt you can potetially be in canger and should be prepared to fight or flee.Cell phones are great but what are you going to do if it takes cops even 3 or 4 minutes to get to you???
