How do you keep yourself safe outdoors?

I never hunt without my trained attack skunk...

that & two fingers in the eyes..... :tongue3:

;D

It's a good thread...
Bummer to have to think about such things when out and about.
I do think there seems to be more senseless crime than I recall in the past.
A shame...

when I'm out around town i carry a knife in plain site, when I'm in the woods i carry a knife and a machete on my belt, when I'm at the beach i have a spear gun strapped to my leg and knife strapped to other leg...the other day i was at the store on line buying a pack of smokes (i work in funeral parlor, so i wear a black suit alot) and some scruffy
nappy hair tooth missing freak looks at me and goes.....huh what do we have here...HEY SUIT....i turned around pulling my knife from my hip and opening it with one hand in a single motion turned looked him straight in his yellow and black eyes and said ....you talkin to me boy.....well he just stepped back two steps and turned and walked away......and a couple a weeks ago some red headed no shirt warein freak was getting thrown out of walmart and when he got to the door was stopping to turn around and go back in and confront the little old lady that asked him to leave and as he turned he was mumbling something about give me a break, well his pants were dam near his knees so i got in his face and said GIVE US A BREAK AND PULL YOUR GOD DAM PANTS UP...well he froze for a second scratched his head pulled up his pants and walked out...little old lady thanked me and three people clapped ....of course i took a bow

I myself use a 10'' craftsman screwdriver that i grinded down to use as a coin probe, that i must say works well. Also it looks pretty scary. With that I feel safe.

Ok.... I am only speaking for myself here so please do not think that I believe that everyone should think like this. First.... we all MUST know our limitations. Some of us are older, weaker and/or have physical issues (knees, back, etc) that prevent us from being effective in a full on fight. Now here is the kicker. I happen to believe that if a person is willing to pull a knife or a gun on you.... they are willing to take your life. I am not a guy who believes that its, "your money OR your life." These days... it's "Your money AND your life."! I speak from much experience and have made the decision long ago that if a person has designs to threaten my life while I am out MD and enjoying my life...... he will pay dearly for that. As others have said... it's HIS decision. My point here is.... please consider NOT playing nice with a guy who confronts you while alone in the woods MD. My suggestion is that you have a plan NOW... embed it into your brain and if that situation comes up....execute your plan with everything that you are. This is your life that we are talking about here. Guess what.... your life is very very cheap these days. I have seen people kill others for the shoes on their feet! Screw that! If they find me dead in the forest while MD.... they will find whoever killed me, laying in many pieces around my body. Its a mind set. I will NOT allow anyone to take my life!!!

Anyway.... I hope that was not to much drama, but all of us (especially you women) must know that if you have no plan in your head now... when your brain searches for an answer to a threat..... it comes up empty. That is when you will panic. Panic is not a good thing. Believe me..... in a life and death situation, your brain WILL remember the plans that you set today and that is what you will automatically do.

Stay safe.

You got it 100% correct

pre planning ( think ahead what if , how can I best defend myself if attacked , knowing what phyiscal limits I have and having the proper gear and willingness to use it-- if not your setting yourself up to "freeze" up and be a victim) that and staying alert to whats going on about you -- ie situational awareness --the two biggest things you can do to be safe if you hunt alone in remote places -- a cell phone is a 100% must if you hunt alone (needless to say) -- it's best to hunt with a buddy if you can --(safety in numbers) or take a good big ole dog with ya to help keep a eye out and cover your back.

carry my .45 that is lying here beside me on my computer desk. i live out in the country so we have no police protection my son is a deputy sheriff but that does not help me because he patrolls the north half of the county.

Some more excellent points have been raised since my first post in this thread. In addition to knowing the laws regarding use of deadly force we all need to know our limitations and know how to use our tools of defense. Self defense is an ever growing issue and as the economy continues to weaken we will continue to see violent crime increase. Along with outdoor safety I would suggest that we all come up with a plan if we should encounter a home invasion. Home invasions have been increasing across the country at an alarming rate and usually the criminals involved are not just happy with stealing your property, they want to hurt, violate and/or kill you. Do what you can to be prepared.

I carry my Colt 1911 / 45 on my hip or in a shoulder hoister. I carry my Colt 38 with hidden hammer in either my hunting vest or my pants pocket. I am considering having a patch made for my hunting vest to go between my shoulders that reads," PROTECTED BY MY FRIEND... ME COLT 45" .Something like that. Suggestions??

Here is my answer to someone who wants to or think on invading my home!

one thing i learned from the Kennedy assassination, never have your picture taken with a weapon.

Sad but necessary discussion. Just last year down toward our neck of the woods in Georgia and North Florida, there were several murders and some missing persons cases. One such situation involved an older retired couple that had taken a day hike off the Blue-ridge Parkway and went missing several days. The wife was discovered a few days after they went missing, she was dead from blunt force trauma. The husband was not found until about a year later after the arrest of some guy who subsequent to having murdered that couple, also went on to murder a young lady he met along a hiking trail down in Georgia. After his arrest, he was also connected to the murder of a lady in Florida who was found on state or national forestland. These folks and no telling how many like them most likely felt that being in the wilderness was one of the safest and most wholesome places one could be on the planet, unfortunately for these, that was a wrong belief. Then there is a current issue of the various drug related activities such as meth houses being set up in some of the most remote locations as well as in the middles of well populated cities. The point being that it isn't just in the cities or populated areas that one encounters serious threat or risk, it is increasingly risky to be even in some of the most serene and pristine not to mention remote wilderness areas. Here in Florida it was discovered that the state and national parks were becoming prime areas for opportunistic criminals, in that since law abiding citizens having been forbidden to carry weapons, these unarmed citizens presented a greater reward at less risk opportunity to the thugs. One last suggestion is that if one does decide to carry a weapon, they ought practice it safe carry and use. Be sure to practice with the same cartridges that you intend to carry in it for protection.

By the way, those who are carrying snake shot, be sure if you have not already done so, to test fire several of them to make sure they cycle properly in your weapon. I find that they aren't usually strong enough of a load to cycle my semi-auto, thus can sometimes jam the slide or leave the gun with a spent cartridge as I attempt the next shot. One other thought as well is that the law in Florida presumes that for one to legally use a gun in defense, they must consider the threat severe enough to warrant killing the individual who represents threat of bodily harm or death. In other words unlike the Lone Ranger, if our weapon is drawn and used, it can't be used to "wing" the thugs or if it has been one must not admit that to be the case. The basic premise being that if it wasn't necessary to kill them, you better not have drawn a weapon or shot them. In closing and in addition to that last thought, the civil liabilities for shooting even if justified can be staggering. The risk in court is often worse for those situations in which a thug lives to sue.

Having had a gun to my head a time or two as well as a knife to my throat (for no explainable reason), I can attest to the fact that one needs to be prepared as well as alert and use wisdom as to where one goes and when he or she goes there.

Very good post, Mike. The only thing that I would add to that is... here in NC, when I took my CCW class, they emphasized that if we shoot, it should be to stop the assailant. We were encouraged to stay away from phrases like... "shoot to kill". Semantics? Maybe, but I'll take their advice.

ccw classes teach shooters to do double tap "center mass" shooting (main torso ) to stop attackers --2 shots to the main body is not shooting to wound it normally kills --since to legally shoot someone -- you MUST believe your life or that of an other innocent person is at risk of death or very serious life threating injury .--- now if anyone asks ---you did not shoot to wound or "punish" an attacker, you shot to STOP THE ATTACK, SINCE YOU FEARED FOR YOUR LIFE (OR THE LIFE OF OTHERS IF THATS THE CASE) --( * PLEASE NOTE -- DEAD BAD FOLKS DO NOT ATTACK MUCH OF ANYTHING NOR DO THEY GET ON THE WITNESS STAND IN COURT AND LIE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED) however if the creep is unarmed and fleeing with his back to you , :stop: you can not just shoot him in the back since he no longer poses a "direct" threat. (damn shame but thats the law)

no harley, that is not what i ment.
i have had weapons training, i just think that many of the people claiming the NEED to carry weapons are the problem.

thanks for serving.
