Hi All,

As the title says I don't have a clue. I dug this yesterday and after cleaning it up some, it is to something the way all the markings are. The bird is pretty cool on it. With this elaborate of markings it is part of something. It is probably something easy and I can't think of it. Anyways thanks for looking and helping if you can.

I also agree its smashed. Could it be broken on the square edge? Hard to tell by the pic.

It looks like the design repeats itself.

please note the food and water hoops....this is where I am leaning at this time.the spot brazing points work for this as does even the way it was broken.again....a simple deductive guess

bubba....if you are able to,"peek"at the inside two things I suspect you may find(or not)

1)inside will not be stamped with image and any wear scratches will be across widh and not length
2)one edge will show more wear than other

if you dont mind and can could you let us know....thx....btw...the scratches I suspect you may find will likely require close examination.it is porcelyn I suspect that came in contact.

Sorry bigfoot the pictures are way too small to make your point and enlarging doesnt help. Try to save your pic as you find them or look for larger pics to post. If you make them smaller and ask us to enlarge them, we lose pixels. Im not saying you are wrong but I am saying your latest pics are too small and thus useless.. You are doing something wrong.

Good guess BTW but I would have liked to see a pic thats not so tiny.

Another suggestion is to post the link. Also maybe somebody else can post the pics for you. . 2 of the pics are not even an inch on my screen.

Somebody mentioned something about the pattern repeating.
This is correct, I made a digital "reconstruction" and noticed the pattern is not 100% exact, the lanterns or baskets hanging under the crossed bamboo sticks are off-place and different in shape, the birds are slightly different, too.

If this came of a longer decorative metal strip, this strip could either have been hand forged or if it was machine pressed the stamp had a 2 set pattern, at least.

Also what do you think if I try to open it up? Do you think I will break it or not? Let me know what you all think. Would like to say thanks for all the help you have all given.

i believe other members have talked about this before, and seemed to have some luck with thin metal like this by heating it in boiling water and gently bending it and heating it and bend some more.

OK. I looked at this relic for a while yesterday and I can't figure out if the characters on it are highly stylized, just gibberish (fake characters), or my kanji reading ability sucks (which I've proven here before).

I changed the orientation of the pic to what I think is correct based on the lantern, torii, and mountain.

When the relic is stretched out flat it is 3 - 4 inches long, right? Could it have been attached to a "hand fan" popular with the ladies in Victorian times? I didn't find any brass ones.

i found a very cool online kanji dictonary , but only found 1 of the symbols so far , i can see that if the letter/word changes just a little it means a total different word .
the only one i see so far is the upside down T with a line thru it,, it means soil-earth-ground-mud or saturday.
does that sound right matt ?

Yes. You are correct. That is the only radical I can decipher.

Here is a possibilty.

This was listed as a letter opener but I think it is a pager turner as it is nearly 9 inches long. Those wacky Victorians had a special tool or device for everything!

The relic could be from a handle.
