How would I tell the Morgan's from the Peace's in tube #53?

Mary, its time to go pick up those books we told you about, heheheh!

Quote from Old Tom-

Mary
In that last picture you show tube #11 the dollar on the left is a 1921 Morgan dollar and on the right is a 1922 Peace dollar. The 1921 Morgan is considered a common date coin.

The Morgans and the Peaces look very different, two completely different designs, front and back. Look at that picture from tube 11, you'll see. The 1921 is a morgan, and the 1922 is a peace.

Got the red book!! I found out that there was a sport collectibles place here in town, so I thought it couldn't hurt to call and see if they had it, and save myself a 100 mile roundtrip drive. They did! I decided against the grading book since I don't plan on selling anyway. The red book has some general grading guidelines, and I think those are good enough for my purposes. Does anyone think I'm foolish for not getting a grading book too? It's just all so darn confusing! :o

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 10:00am MST 1/31

Redbook is fine. There isn't a "grading book" that I know of, unless I missed that somewhere too...it could happen..haha.

The grading I spoke of means sending the coin to a company and having them give a very accurate grade of the coins condition. This helps in re-selling the coins, but if your not selling them it would probably be a waste of money.

Whatever you do, keep those coins protected!

Mary

For what your doing (not selling the coins) the red book and some on-line sites should be fine.
And yes there is a good grading book .. maybe you saw it when you picked up the redbook.

Good thing about the grading book is that it has pictures of the different grades.

You could always post a pick of a coin .. and see what people thing the grade is on-line.

You can always try a on line search for gradind tips.

Here is one I did for Morgan dollars

Just posted new pics of all of the loose 2x2's I could find. At the end of that list is a little ancient coin. Any ideas?

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 10:00am MST 1/31

The grading book is called Photograde by James F Ruddy, and you probably don't need it if you're not going to sell the coins.

Do send away for a copy of the Cherrypickers guide, however. Varieties can be worth several times the prices listed in the red book.

You'll want as accurate a description as possible for insurance purposes.

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 9:40am MST 2/1

that is quite the collection you have there. I have been collecting coins for over 40 years. I realy encourage you to get the Photograde book, it will help you understand how to grade different type coins. Simple things are used for grading, such as breast feathers on the back of morgan dollars, hair detail on washington quarters, etc. Grading greatly affects a coin's value, as well as certain low mintage coins. Most coins have a mint mark distinguishing where it was minted (D = denver, SF= san francisco, P=philadelphia, CC= Carson City). Please don't clean any coins, and always handle by the edge. Some of the coins you have are silver, so there is metal value as well as collector value.

If you don't intend to sell them, then be sure and keep them in a safe place. You probably have thousands of dollars worth of coins in that collection. Use the redbook for an estimate of value, and you can always search completed auctions on ebay to see what a certain date/mint mark/ condition coin sells for.

Definately get CHERRYPICKING book.

Also I see 1972 Pennies. That date has a double-die error and that penny goes for $225.00 in good condition.

Your weird quarter is called a STANDING LIBERTY QUARTER made from 1916 to 1930.

Really nice collection you have there.

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 9:40am MST 2/1

Have some one check the 1972 ike dollars. Some were struck with a proof die by mistake (type 2) and are worth quite a bit of $$ in mint condition. one sold last year for 17k.

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 9:40am MST 2/1

I have to say that is an amazing collection! I love the capped busts! the 1794 draped bust cent is amazing!! The red book is defenitly one of the things you need.

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 9:40am MST 2/1

If you do not need the money, I would not sell any of them, they can only go up in value.
And you would have something to pass on to your children.

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 9:40am MST 2/1

On the website you say there is a 1921 Peace dollar. If it depicts Liberty with the spiked headdress present on dates from 1922 to 1935, in your case, that would be a valuable coin. Get a Greysheet and/or a Blue Book.

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 9:40am MST 2/1

Peace Dollars were made from 1921 thru 1935. They did make some in 1964 also, they were never released and were supposed to be melted. There is rumor that some did leave the mint.

You can tell a peace Dollar by looking at the bottom of the reverse and you will see the word "PEACE" The 1921 is the key date, here are some prices from a online guide. They made both Morgan and Peace Dollars in 1921.

Peace G VG F VF XF
1921 89 110 117 124 133

Posting picture for reference.
