Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 9:40am MST 2/1

I just got back from Texas and helping my husband clean out his Grandmother's estate. In her safe deposit box, we found about 600-800 coins. I know absolutely nothing (less than that!) about coins, and Grandma has Alzheimer's and can't help. I posted the first 6 coins at http://www.monshaugenfamily.com/coins.htm Any information, history, neat facts, value, etc... would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Grandma's Collection

wow :o :o How fun! This is how I got into coins, selling them for my wife's g-ma.

Go buy a 2007 Redbook. You can find them at Wal-mart or any coin dealer. Then go through the book and read it very well for each coin. It lists some errors which is nice as some coins are worth a ton because of an error.

Any coins you have that look like they are brand new, and are worth quite a bit in the book, will be worth having graded. You'll fetch top $$ for them if they are graded (through PCGS)

Have fun! Please post pictures of your collection, or some select coins after you get them sorted out.

Re: Grandma's Collection

Another book you need to have: Photograde. You can actually see the guidelines printed and in photographs for grading U.S. coins(the book has pictures of every U.S. coin in every grade) and then you can grade the coins yourself and get a good idea of the conditions so that you can look up the prices in the 2007 Redbook or (the following option is a little more accurate because it is published monthly) Coin Prices magazine. The magazine is also cheaper than the Redbook, which is a hardcover book. And Photograde you can get for $9.99 or so. Magnifying glass (plastic one) is inexpensive too.

Always hold a coin so that your fingers are on either side of the coin and touch only the rim--never the face of the coin. You can see the correct way in the photo of the half dollar, third picture down, in the following Treasurenet thread:

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,67007.0.html

This is especially important for uncirculated coins and old copper coins that are still shiny or have some other natural hue (red and lilac are common tints). Oils from your fingers will turn them dark, and the last thing you want is a fingerprint on a valueable old uncirculated Indian Head Cent or Large Cent. It looks like the 1838 dime was purchased some time ago. At AU (almost uncirculated) it is quite a desireable coin, and certainly worth more than 75 bucks now.

Oh, and never clean any of the coins with anything. It devalues them!

Let us know if you find any goodies, and good luck!

Regards,

Buckleboy

Re: Grandma's Collection

Thanks for the info, everyone! I just posted some more pics. Specifically two possibly Roman coins? Any ideas on those?

Just posted pics of Vials 11-20. Coin count is over 500 now and there's still lots more to go. Found more of the Morgan's, and posted more pics of that 1881 CC Morgan. I'm getting better at taking the pics! At least everything isn't yellow anymore! :)

Along with the Red Book and photograde, pick up a copy of the Cherrypicker's guide. You'll find die varieties worth many times the numismatic value. Keep in mind the values listed in the Redbook are retail values. If you take them to a dealer to sell, you'll get a lot less than this. A Bluebook lists the wholesale value, which is generally 50% of the Redbook value.

I'm in need of halves for my collection. If you're looking to sell some, any chance you'd offer them for sale in here?

Silly me :)

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 5:45pm MST 1/30

Posted pics of vials #36-#54 (name has been changed to tubes as I was told this is the hobby term). Everything that is currently posted is now in the safe deposit box, but if you want a better picture of something let me know and I can get it to you in a couple of days.

Jeffro- I don't even know everything I have yet and we really weren't planning on selling anything. However, if by halves you mean half dollars, I seem to have a ton of them and may consider parting with a few. Let me know what you're looking for.

Nice group of coins you have there, you are lucky to have had such a nice grand mother.

It is good advice to get coin prices and photo grade, they will help in putting values on your coins.
You can also watch E bay and see what similar coins are selling for.

As for coin grading service like PCGS, having coins graded (slabbed) is a good idea, for the higher end coins.
Not just the uncirculated one, and not all uncirculated ones. Having a coin slabbed/graded can cost anywhere from $10 to $30 per coin. So paying to having a common coin like a 1964 half dollar graded might not be a good idea. But having those Carson City "CC" Morgan dollars could help you get more money if you were going to sell them.

Check some of the whitman holders and make sure the correct coins are in each slot. I looked at the pictures sort of quickly so could be wrong .. but thought the 1914D Lincoln did not have the "D". A 1914 D Lincoln is one of the key dates.

Also in one of the tubes of sliver dollars, I thought you listed a 1921 Peace dollar, that one has more value and should be separate from the common one. A 1921 Peace dollar is a high relief coin, which mean that lady liberty raises higher then the rim of the coin and can be damaged if other coins sit on top of it. It can have good value if it is in higher grade.

What ever you do, you are lucky to have such a nice lot of coins.

The masonic token was more than likely given to a new Entered Apprentice as a keepsake to keep track of his progression through the 3 steps of masonry. Probably would have used some kind of stamp to enter dates at the lodge once the position was obtained.

As a mason, I find it really cool and a neat idea. I would like to know if you would want to part with it, and if so what kind of price you might be asking for it. If you don't want to get rid of it, could you possibly take some closer pictures of just the token?
Thank you in advance!

As a mason I like old mason things

Just posted new pictures of all of the proof sets I could find. I'm now back to the original Pocket Album. In my opinion, this is where the interesting stuff is! Tons of variety. Pages 3 and 4 are now posted.

Tom- Thank you for the information. I'll check and make sure the coins are in the right pockets. Is this the Peace Dollar you're talking about?

As for the Masonic token, I need to try to figure out what it is exactly and see if it's something worth keeping. When I find that out, I'll let you guys know. My grandfather was a Mason as well, as was my husband's great great grandfather. My husband recalls that his grandmother used to have her grandfather's masonic sword when he was a kid. He says he loved that sword! It was really intricate. Unfortunately, someone stole it. :(

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 7:15am MST 1/31

You bet thats where the interesting stuff is! You have quite a bit of learning to do, it'll be fun. Be sure and check each coin for varieties. For instance, that 1836 half is now worth about $120 retail, but if its the 50 over 00 type, you can double the value.

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 7:15am MST 1/31

Just finished posting the rest of the coins in the Pocket Album- pages 5-10. I definitely need some help with a few things in there. Up to almost 1500 coins now! My paltry original estimate of 500-600 is just a little off. ;)

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 10:00am MST 1/31

Mary
In that last picture you show tube #11 the dollar on the left is a 1921 Morgan dollar and on the right is a 1922 Peace dollar. The 1921 Morgan is considered a common date coin.

But in another picture you show tube #53, I can't see the top row of coins very well, but you list 5 of them as being 1921's. If those are 1921 Peace dollars and not Morgans then they should be put in their own separate holders.

Just trying to help ... and nice coins

Re: Grandma's Collection- New pics posted 10:00am MST 1/31

How would I tell the Morgan's from the Peace's in tube #53?
