lol I guess it does look a little like a tooth in the picture. There is definelty a grey stone attached to it though. Sorry I wasn't clear enough the grey slab is a bit of porcelain I scratched the rock on. I can feel a definite bite in the rock when I scratch it with a penny.

The problem with "feeling" the bite, is that the penny might be getting scratched into deeply - hence the feeling of a "resistance".
Use a magnification to check for visible scratches - best is a 10x loupe. Basic equipment for anyone handling rocks.:occasion14:

Hello everyone. This rock was found in southern California. It came out of a creek and had all kinds of crystals outside and in. My fiance thinks it may be topaz and quartz but I'm not sure as I am new to minerals, and rocksView attachment 1438836View attachment 1438837View attachment 1438838View attachment 1438839View attachment 1438840View attachment 1438841 sorry that I can't give more info and all these pictures are from the same rock. Thank you in advance.

Quartz, both massive and crystals from what I can see.

Lost my post in thus thread...

In other words I have no idea if someone ever responded/ identified the rocks.

Ha, I guess that happens to many people. It is surprisingly long.:tongue3:

#1 Is possibly tourmaline
#2 Apatite?

I broke up one of the hexagonal structures - inside, it was a different color to the rest of the rock, being more "pinkish" - and it had cavities with small round nodules of a white metal inside them, as well as some sulfides..

OK - so I'm guessing that these hexagonal crystaline structures are orthoclase? (edit: or Albite...)

Only things that seem to match..

Neither forms hexagonal crystals. In your prospecting, don't worry about details quite yet. Unless there's lots and lots of the stuff and it contains gold.
Knowing the minerals & minute details are more important before actual extraction of ore, but not at the very start of prospecting.

Now, if you need to know; get back to basics. Hardness test, get less blurry picture of the "hexagonal crystal".

Some rocks I've removed from a vein. Lots of iron oxides and quartz.

mystery rock chunks.jpg

Hey!

Can you tell me what this mineral is? I found a whole bunch of these rocks in a dump outside New Orleans. I have no idea where the came from originally and I assume they're not particularly precious. They are very uniformly silver and smooth like aluminum foil, so any other colors you see in the photos are reflected. The black specks you can see are pores. I smashed one with a hammer to make sure they weren't just spray painted. The chunks that broke off were sheet-like with some very sharp edges. Fairly lightweight.

I know nothing about rocks so I'll spare you my vague speculations.

Thanks!

IS THERE GOLD IN THEM ROCKS
