Could be sedimentary; mudstone? Uncertain. You're better of asking for Indian artifacts in a non-geology related thread. Because I have no clue.

Hi there, these are some smaller pieces from a foot long/wide rock I found on a coastal beach in NSW, Australia 15 years ago. Unfortunately didn't keep the big chunk as I was just a kid. Would love to know your thoughts! Thank you

Good afternoon folks! I found this rock some time ago in a pile of fill rock while walking my dog around a suburban development in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and there appear to be a number of minerals or gems in it. The shiny gold coloured stuff (not the yellow quartz, but the weird folded looking mineral or metal) is quite soft and is easily dented with a pin tip, and some of it can flake off if the pin penetrates deep enough. Additionally there are numerous red minerals/gems studded in it, which weren't scratched by the pin test. I provided a picture with and without flash to try and show the colour of the red stone. The smaller piece is an associated chunk, I believe, which was found near the bigger one and it appears to be mostly a single large red gem/mineral/thing.

Edit: The measuring tape is in inches, it was the only one I had on hand >.<











If anyone could point me in the right direction as to what this could be I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi Mongoose, what I see is Red Garnet, Milky Quartz, Iron Pyrite, Possibly Black tourmaline, These things and that matrix look to be Granitic in nature and have seen similar in southern Oregon, near Ashland.
Very Granitic area and several Gold mines in the area.

Awesome! Thank you very much, my background is in archaeology so when it comes to the specifics of rock and mineral identification I'm somewhat of a lost puppy >.>

I've always sort of wanted to break down the rock and see if there's any large peices of the Red Garnet I could make into something cool, but the raw chunk looks kind of pretty on its own.

Might be granulite.

This rock was found Northern NSW Australia, It is extreamly heavy for its size, Mildly Magnetic, Has a Melted like texture over 60% of surface which is extreamly strong, , has lots of green /Gold like crystal areas.. I carved into it alittle , seems it has lots of Crystal /mineral properties, View attachment 1640167View attachment 1640168

That looks like hematite to me that has been heavily weathered.. density is the telltale sign. Streak test would be reddish.

Note that also basalt and other ultra mafic volcanics can look like this.. green crystals would be olivine or epidote

I have one more find for you to identify - It was found about 6inch under the soil at an archaeological dig in the south of england.

Any ideas on what it is would be great

Hi I got given this rock so I’m unsure where it has come from but I live in Victoria Australia if that helps any. Here is some picture showing the rock as I got it and also some pics of what l have been mining out of it also the nuggets are not magnetic and it flattens when hit with a hammer so I know it’s not fools gold. If you could help me identify what metal is in the rock that would be fantastic. Thanks Angie
