Black in color but you can see some dark red in it. Also very heavy thought it was a meteorite but it’s not magnetic and it streaks red. Metacinnibar? Hematite?

Rock Rings..I discovered a sandstone rock (about 3/4 ft wide X 1/2 ft) at the top of the riverbed with several rings.

It was sandstone with several rings. Imagine how the rings in a tree stump appear.

The outmost ring was about the size of a grapefruit. The rings appeared a darker brown almost rust color.

I will go back and take pictures but meanwhile what are everyone's thoughts?

If the sandstone has colored layers and one of the above layers broke of, like a window, to see the layer underneath it...
Kinda hard to explain. But then it can look like what you describe.

Found this rock few years ago in Iowa and I can't figure out what it is. Is very for heavy for its size, slightly magnetic feels very smooth. Only thing I can find online that resembles it is a rock from Arizona and a meteorite from mars. Please let me know if can. I'm sure it's something you guys see everyday.Heres my Pics of mybroView attachment 1557638

Banded iron formation, BIF.

Pulled this cool looking rock out of the woods. It caught my eye because it was standing in its edge, with sunlight coming through it.Second Pix. has a flashlight under it.001.JPG004.JPG

Since hematite is more common, that's a good guess.

Looked at a bunch of pictures and it doesn't really look like hematite and this thing is really really heavy. With the way you can see the Reds trying to push through the dark black it really looks like the cinnabar ornaments that come up on google search.

Google "scratch test" for what ever minerals you suspect and then do one. The underside of a porcelain toilet tank lid works well and is what I use.

I did it streaks really red. Both cinnabar and hematite streak red though.

With over 4000 minerals known to man, pictures are of limited use...
If you still are uncertain, see if a knife will scratch it. Use a decent bit of pressure and a magnifying glass to check for the scratch.
If it breaks, chips - try again with less pressure.

Ok i will research the rest
