Found these near the Haw River in Burlington, NC. Any idea what they are? Didn't respond to a vinegar test and can't seem to be scratched with a knife. FYI, the brown coloring is dirt. View attachment 1448748

It scratches, yes. The lighter colored layers are considerably softer than the darker colored layers.
