I am about to build a 60" x 12" x 4" X 0.80 Sluice using Gold Hog Mats. The Sluice will sit under my 12" trommel and will be fed by shovel or 5 gallon buckets. Will be using a pump that can deliver nearly 8000 GPH. Please take a look at the image. I had contacted Doc at Gold Hog and he suggested the configuration in the image below. At the end of the Sluice will be a Fluid Bed Gold Trap. The material that we are digging can range from flake gold to 1/4" diameter gold. The trommel will be classifying to 1/2" before dumping into the Sluice. I would like some input from those who are using the Gold Hog Mats, your thoughts, idea's, what your using, how your using the mats, etc. Thank You In Advance

I run a 4" dredge in the Midwest and catch the fine flour glacier gold. Doc runs a 5" dredge in Ga. and collects super fine and decent size pickers too.

What kind of matting is in your 4 inch. I was thinking about changing my keenes carpet out and was looking for some ideas.

AzViper, i run 1 inch drop per foot length of sluice. this unit i'm running is 72" long. I don't have a clue what degree that is. I attach a pointer on a pivot, centered length wise on the sluice side and have a marked inch scale below it. Its just a fast reference for me it might be crude but it works for me.

mu50stang, Currently Im running ur,ur,rh,rh,sc,rb,br,sc,rb,br,br,br,br and ur,ur,rh,rh,rh,sc,rb,br,sc,rb,br,br,br. My dredge starts out at 16" and tapers out to 24" at 6' long. I have a divider running down the center because that mat is just so dam heavy. But take a look at one of Doc's new video's were he shows his 5" dredge running where he's running all rh, were he cuts the tall riffle front or back, (cut or throw) I like it!

please refer to Gold Hog's Videos, Forum or just email them to help you "dial" them in.

I have a keen three-stage sluice and I am running my slope at about eight degrees plus or minus and about 90 percent on the throttle I am catching MINUS 150 Gold and up.

MikeMike,
Hey thanks for posting that chart. And also sounds like your doing pretty good at catching the small stuff.

I have a 96" x 12" highbanker equipped with Gold Hog matting (see video below). I run it with my Honda wh15 pump at 1/2 throttle (~70 gpm) and set it at a 7 deg. pitch. I move about 3 tons an hour through it and have great success.

I used adjustable legs from a walker and square tubing for my sluice stand, makes for a nice quick setup as the legs fold.

Thx. Again we have more GH users with nothing but great news. We have a member in the forums who is dead set that the mats do not work yet I and others believe he has never used the mats or did not use the mats properly.

Thomas Harrell are you running your sluice box about 8 degrees?

weary 1 what is your arrangement with mats and degrees of your sluice?

Will be installing a diffuser on the bottom of the stainless steel water spigot to spread the water across the sluice.

Sweet setup AZ. Will you be posting of video of this beauty in action?!?

You bet I will. Hoping to get everything finished up before my surgery date of Dec. 18th so that I do not have to deal with any of the welding, cutting, painting, etc. Just kinda a bad time right now and I only work on the entire system when I can. I need to give myself a good 3 months to heal up and will be back at mining with a few guys that can carry the weight until I am completely rehabbed. Hope to be out in March or earlier as a spectator.

AZ,heres hopeing for you a speedy and fast recovery!also, years ago, i made my adjustable legs for my drywasher like you did. i was dissappointed in how they worked after all the dust/sand got into the adjustment buttons.

Anyone have a piece of VR Gold Hog Matting they want to part with? I need to be able to cut the mat slightly over 12 inches and have straight sides. Hate to have to buy a 36 inch piece. Decided to go VR, VR at the top of the sluice as I will installing a punch plate that will except my classified 1/2" dirt/rock. The punch plate is mainly to help dissipate the water and get the water flowing evenly across the sluice. I will be using a piece of rubber as well.

Will pay for the mat, shipping, etc.

AZ, I need two 10 inch pieces of UR. I will be buying it soon. Sell you the remainder 16ish inches for the low low price of shipping plus ten bucks. Should fit in a medium flat rate box so shipping should only be around $13

Yeah after a few of you mentioned that I got a plan to tackle that issue... Thx and I hope for a speed recovery...

AZ I ran all season with those type adjustable legs. They are fine. I got warned about the same things but guys like you and I have a tendency to clean our equipment after each run. I always unload onto my lawn and hose everything off. Just pay special attn to flexing the buttons while rinsing. No problems. The only issue I had was the buttons are hard to push with gloves on. Lol.

My plan is to use some large silicone tubing I have to stretch over the holes. Thx. I welcome rehab and will be back sooner than the Doc. says I will.

Lyan,

I was digging around through the box my GH mats were shipped in and found one piece of UR mat. Totally spaced out I had it and it fit what I needed. Thanks for the offer but its not needed now. Waiting to see your updated photos of you completely drilled out cylinder. I will complete my cylinder tomorrow. I have less than 250 holes to drill.

Thanks for the reply,
Is it recommended to keep the riffles or should I remove them.

So today I was going to take it easy and just hangout and do nothing waiting for the Arizona / Arizona State football game, but then I got a wild hair to setup my sluice and pump to do a test run. I was in the middle of doing a flow test to see how the rubber mat worked that I installed across the sluice box when my mining buddy called. He was in the area so I told him to stop by. Well one thing led to another and we took the last bucket of dirt that I had vacuumed up 4 or 5 weeks ago and we ran it down the sluice. I found out that I need to modify the rubber mat to be much longer to even the flow out when just using the sluice. I plan to use the sluice without the trommel on December 14th my last day I will be mining for a while. So below was our clean out plus a bunch of ultra fine gold in the 100 to 200 mesh range that I did not bother to recover right now. Saving all the black sand and micro gold for a rainy day. For that one person (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) that's a non believer in the Gold Hog Mats you need to prove to me and others that the mats do not work because they DO!!!!

I ran the sluice at an 8 degree angle and the flow of water was strong. I was dumping whatever the vac had picked up including 2" rocks. This bucket was vacuumed off of the bedrock from a hole I had dug.

Videos of the water flow down the sluice using Gold Hog Mats. Doc I hope you can chime in on your thoughts, to much water, not enough water, etc. As you can see the valve is really throttled down as I can really put some water down the sluice. Please make sure to watch in HD for a clearer video... Sluice is at 8 degree slope or 1.4" per foot of sluice, 60" sluice. I also upgraded the rubber mat to smooth out the flow. I also need to change out the flat hose. I have a 50 foot section of hose that is used on swimming pools, just need to go over to my storage locker and get it.

The first video the water flow rate I changed to be more aggressive about half way through the video. The second video the flow rate is more moderate.

:icon_thumleft: Looks good to me but without any classified material in the water it's hard to know for sure plus I'm no expert on those mats.

But for a starting point that can be fine tuned in the field as needed id say pretty near perfect!

GG~
