I found my second half dollar for the year a couple of weeks ago and did not have the opportunity to post it until now. As usual with me, it was the only coin that I found that day, and I didn't find it until I was about 5 minutes from heading home. Of course I thought it was another can because it's so rare that I find anything this large, of value. So as I was digging the hole, in the rain, I had lost all hope, and each shovel full of dirt was dug with a feeling of "what am I doing here", lol... Thank God it was standing vertical in the hole, about 4" down, because with my attitude at the moment, I surely would have struck it with my shovel. After I pulled it out of the hole, I sobered up real quick and became grateful once again for finding another jewel to add to my collection... ;o)

I found the Mercury Dime at the same location that I have been hunting relentlessly for the past 2 weeks, at the old park near Pittsburgh, PA. I have posted numerous coins from this site and they are all in excellent condition. So far this year I have found a 1939, 1941, and 1943 Mercury Dime. What are the odds of this happening in sequential order, lol... Same thing with the half dollars. This one is from 1945 and the other one that I found was from 1943... So I guess I have to find one from 41 or 47 before the year is up, to keep the odds in my favor.

What the H%&# did you do to those poor coins ? It looks like you cleaned them on a buffing wheel.... :dontknow: :laughing9: No offense. They are yours to do with as you please but if they were rare coins you have just completely ruined the value of them. Luckily they're not.. Cool finds in any case. It's always nice to find silver.

Yep, sure does look like a double die obverse! Too bad it was buffed. :'(

I don't own a buffing wheel, however, cotton swabs and Glass Cleaner apparently produce the same effect...

Looks can be deceiving... the only truth is that it's definitely not a double die obverse, and you can plainly see the corrosion on both sides of the coin. It's the lighting that created this appearance...

I believe that Mercury dime is a double die obverse.

If it is not an Camera error I would agree and... As for the Glass cleaner, Oh well lesson learned. :dontknow: Light rinse with Distilled Water works just fine for most silver. :icon_thumleft:

Great finds !! :icon_thumleft: :headbang:

Keep @ it and HH !! :D ;D

I don't understand what you mean, how can corrosion effect the the way the coin was struck ? Are you using the right word "Corrosion" ?? :icon_scratch: Its silver it dose not rust or corrode... :dontknow: (It can gain sentiment from other rusty metals or Tarnish but all this can be cleaned off) I'm still sure its a double die. :icon_thumleft: This is not a bad thing dude this is a good thing. :laughing7: :headbang:

Keep @ it and HH !! ;D :D

That's not what I said... I said the lighting is what made the coin appear as if it is a double die obverse. Corrosion? Perhaps you are right... sediment from other metals is what I am referring to. It was not buffed as assumed.

If you can see clearly with a loop that its not a double die then I guess its not. :dontknow: We can't tell from the picture very well but it dose look like one. :icon_scratch: I mean this is not a bad thing if its a double die. :headbang: They are more valuable if they are strong and clear like this one looked. :icon_thumleft:

Keep @ it and HH !! ;D :D

The real problem here is the deception in advertising. ie: the title

:laughing7:

WTG on finding silver. :icon_thumright:

Don't feel bad MUD, when I looked at it, the first thing I noticed was the "IN GOD WE TRUST". Sure looked like a double struck to me. Then the L and I in LIBERTY.

Oh well, it was a good thought. :laughing9: :laughing9:

Nice finds,

The burgh is a good place to hunt. I can remember those days of shining silvers to death. But after awhile you start to like the natural beauty of a coin with it's age on it. I only clean silvers if they are really bad now.

Nice silver. It looks great! Good looking coins for sure

I agree, stop her from going wild!

Who's that? Your Old Lady, lol? Great... now I am going to have to change the title to "Grandma's Gone Wild!"... These coins represent the women that we dream of finding out in the field, not the one's who induce nightmares...

back in the day when those coins was made-- (WW2 era woman worked in factories and shipyards to help in the war effort) the woman in the photo most likely was a "hottie" for her time (LOL)-- the photo looks 1940 ish -- so shes about the same age as your ladies * you found (since the walker gal and the liberty gal on the merc were full grown women )-- the dime was not a male mercury figure but rather a winged helmeted liberty -- for freedom of thought.
